Why am I using only my index finger to pluck? (A few of you have asked...)
For basslines with a consistent pulse feel, I use a single finger when possible for more consistent tone. The difference in string plucking positions, from one finger to the next, is enough to cause a change in tone. Pluck one spot on the string with your index finger, then pluck half an inch towards the bridge again with the same finger. Hear the difference? James Jamerson used this approach as well. :)
