It makes sense for there to be tears in splinter's eyes when confronting the shredder. This man killed his master - his family - fifteen years ago and even spitefully cut off his ear. And here he was trying to do it again. It was a smart move on the crew's part to keep those years. It visually showed his outrage beyond his words. I think splinter put the pieces together when he first saw the glyph on the Foot's headband. And the fact that he had disfigured Saki is a more plausible reason for the mask since it completely covers that area of his face.

It really says something when honestly I can't see the opening of the movie any other way. I think it works to see the conflict first and have our focal point shift from April's pov to the turtles after the fight. It helps keep that feel of mystery from the side of the normal world, which just looks like a crime wave. Having the rooftop parkour (while it IS a turtles staple) and the big fight cut (and honestly even the shell reveal) makes it all the more sweet when you see the Turtles in full light and what they can do. Plus it more sense when they tell Splinter they weren't seen if WE couldn't even see them
