Can the Polite Slim Turtle Co-Exist with the Pugnacious Captain Willard?

Yesterday, I received the Seiko Slim Turtle SPB317 and my immediate thought was, "OMG, this competes with the Captain Willard." Yet they are very different watches in terms of personality. Also, I discuss putting an orange Tropic strap on my espresso Seiko SPB147.

Just got my SPB317 a few days as a birthday gift.

I also own the SPB143, SLA033 and SPB151.

I likely will sell the SLA033 (for all its fine finishing, the proportion looks off due to the 19mm strap relative to the big case; and I fret while wearing it due to its price) and will also sell the SPB151 (I think the SPB317 is way more comfortable and elegant while offering the same looks).

Will keep the SPB143 and SPB317.

Slim Turtle case looks great. I really like it! The white version is the one to get 👍

Yep same here. SPB151/Willard is my pick. All comes down to my case shape preference for the 6105-8110 over the 6105-8000. If anything the slim diver is probably a better re-issue of its original so I wish it were my choice….but so it goes.

I can highly recommend a Staib mesh bracelet for the 147, it’s elevated my 147 to feeling like a much more premium watch. I ordered the brushed finish and it matches near perfect for colour.

I went to see the SPB317J1 and the Willard in person today. I was prepared to buy either. But as I already have 2 Grand Turtles, I went with the SPB317J1. It's a lovely watch, very vintage. Still looking at the SPB183J1, though...Already got a blue tropic strap on the way.

It's true what you say about the Seikoholics Obsessing over the 2%. I have a collection of the reinterpretation Willards and 62MAS's reissues in various colours 😍

Exact same reason why I went for the 313 instead Jeff... The white dialed slim re issue...

I am in the same boat as you. Bought the spb315 first then got the spb153 green dial Willard. Love the both but I love the Willard more. I don’t want to get rid of the slim turtle as it looks so retro and cool especially with the gilt dial and a rubber strap.

I want an SPB317 but like you it would compete with my Willard X which I love soo soo much....don't think I can do it. But I'm weak and might still get one down the road. 😄

McMahon, if you think “watch madness “ is a big problem then life is pretty good 😊! Best regards

Totally agree with your opinion in regards to the slim turtle, I looked at one and they lack the presence of the Willard, particularly if you have a larger than average wrist size. Look forward to seeing the orange tropic on the 147! Could strap changes be a route to watch contentment McMahon?

I'm already forgetting about the War, in anticipation of seeing the orange tropic strap on your espresso Seiko SPB147. TY McMahon for the sedative.

Been wearing my 147 on an orange single pass nato, the colours just work for some reason. Also wear mine on a uncle seiko green gl831 strap, also a great combo. Been wanting the strap code oyster for it, but you’ve given me some food for thought 🤔

I have an orange tropic for my Turtle. Love it when I want a pop of colour.

i always prefer the looks of the willard over any turtle. i have an Gen 2 Seiko Orange monster and Ginza Alpinist LE (which is quite costly) and find actual Willard abit expensive so i gotten myself a Willard homage assembled by a seiko enthusiast locally in my home country Singapore.

Captain Willard was most certainly "pugnacious" and "rambunctious" when he smashed that mirror with a drunken karate-punch in 'Apocalypse Now' LOL. I love your videos, Jeff, so no shots fired etc, but you think about this stuff too much, man! All 3 watches in this video are awesome, don't get rid of any of them. I have watches that I wear maybe once a year, but when I feel like wearing THAT watch, nothing else will suffice. I've literally never sold a watch, because I know that sometime down the line, I'll want to wear it again, even if I'm bored of it in the present. Cool video!

Blimey never thought I'd see the day, when you like a strap over the bracelet. They do a chocolate brown colour that would match the 147 nicely too. Personally I would sell the Willard and keep the slimmer version as it's a better quality watch. I've never owned a turtle, although I've always thought they are unique design. I'm defo a 62mas man, I just love the case shape best. If you get used to a rubber strap, you'll have to try the sla043 at some point. Good luck though Jeff.

The tropic straps also look amazing on the Willard too.
