When he describes wanting a friend to his sister, and descibes his feelings towards his friend, it comes off as really really really gay. I have two hypothoses: 1. Male friendship was seen as very different back then and more intimate like girlfriends see their relationships with each other today. 2. It was written by a woman and it shows in the sappiness even moreso than Ted's character on How I Met Your Mother.
