A short video on apple tree grafting. I've been grafting as a hobby for 3 years now and mostly use the whip and tongue graft. The first year I did 6 ,the second 50 and this year 30.

Thanks for this. I'm doing about 40 this year (my first attempt). I have tried a few different grafts. I have tried some saddle grafts out of respect for Stephen H. (I'm a big fan) but my inclination is to migrate toward a whip and tongue/side graft like you showed. That seems to be what most nurseries in my area (NY State) but it seems that you need to be flexible based on the materials you have to work with. Regards, Vincent.

This is best grafting way and most of grafts succeed with this way. First timer with grafting can succeed with this way.

Good instructive video. I expect you are thoughtful about the possibility of accidents after the nasty bruise to your right thumb recently. Do post again to show us how well these have done.

Nice video. I didnt realise you can whip&tongue with different calipers. I just used cleft grafts.

Hi Stephen, Thankyou for your positive comments. Yes I'm very mindful of accidents. Experience brings respect. I now always try to cut away from myself and keep my hands and limbs behind the blade. The Thumb was a Laurel and Hardy style 'when I nod my head you hit it' moment. Will post follow ups as and when.

Hi the wax cools almost instantly and solidifies on contact. Wax has a low melting point so will not do any permanent damage to the tree. I put a dab of wax on the end to try and stop the scion drying out and 'dyeing back'

hi!, in my little town, i have only bee wax for the graft, what do you think about it?

2 questions:
1) why didnt you put 2 scions on the root?
2) how do you get the root stock in the first place?
3) why did you cut the top off and left it so short?

awesome! what kind of wax is it? does it matter?

Do you have to do the tongues, or is it just for the benefits you mention? The graft will still work without the tongues right?

What if the scion is bigger than the root stock? Side graft with whip and tongue?

Thanks for the video. Where did you get your rootstock from?

does the wax damage the ends at all? i would just assume so because the wax should be hot to be applied right?

Thanks for the useful information. If you are not familiar with the saddle graft you might visit StephenHayesUK. Excellent site. I use the utility knife also, and it works great. I use a new one, but if one wants one can drop them in a jar of alcohol. I am also terrible at sharpening.
