Probably to capture the film's drama and melancholy. Or probably because the Academy loves it when it comes to black and white films nowadays.

Actually I watch a lot of German films as I'm from Germany myself. But I just don't get warm with the style of acting. It feels so unnatural and staged, almost theatrical. Although I have to say I absolutely love Sibel Kekilli, especially in "Die Fremde".

The premise sounded promising. But why did it have to be black and white? I don't see any reason for that. And the acting isn't really top-notch either. :/
