Netflix relishes being the potential "theater killer" but will it finally kill the in-person movie going-experience? The experiment of letting GLASS ONION run for one week might shows an interesting answer. Rian Johnson gives a deeper look of his opinions on the short run in the theaters.

I have been an attorney in Hollywood for 15 years, working at Disney, Skydance and BuzzFeed as well as BigLaw firms. I have been the lead attorney on over 12 feature theatrical films. I negotiate and draft above the line deals and these include: actors, directors, writers, producers and rights.

I agree that there is a desire to be around other people. During covid, one of the theaters in my town started running older movies, and my dad went to see Inception in theaters. He has seen that movie many times, but still felt regret he never saw it on "the big screen, " and I think he's right. There is something fun about going to see a movie in a theater and fully immersing yourself in the experience.

I was so annoyed I missed Glass Onion in theaters. We had planned to go watch it the next week. Knives Out in theaters was so much fun.

If you enjoy reading, I highly suggest checking out The Inheritance Games book series. It's like a young adult version of Knives Out and it's so much fun!

As long as theatres continue providing innovative live experiences like 4-d -it will not die. People even pay for interactive experiences like Secret Cinema. Netflix cannot beat that.

I love going to the theater, but I have allergies and migraines that react negatively to scents, fragrances, essential oils etc. so it is always a gamble with my health to go and be in an enclosed space with strangers. For this reason I am happy to be able to watch new movies on streaming before spoilers become unavoidable.

Who knew I would come to a lawyer's youtube channel to learn that THERE IS A SECOND AVATAR MOVIE?!?!?!?!🤣

But once again, what a fascinating video from even a cultural standpoint, blending law with real lived social experiences. With every video I see more and more your passion for storytelling and anthropological analysis coming out, and it's just really awesome. =)

I would LOVE to see a video about "the state of Hollywood"! I feel like the "state of Hollywood" is almost synonymous with "the state of the entertainment industry, " simply from the perspective that Hollywood holds so much power and influence. But since we also have such a beautiful plethora of indie/freelance content creators and the access to entry in entertainment is way easier to obtain in this current age, I'm curious to see from your educated standpoint what you make of it all.

I mean I remember a few years ago HeatherFeatherASMR and a team of small freelance animators made a semi-interactive video that was almost on par with something you could see at Disney World! IT WAS INCREDIBLE!!! Human beings have always been bursting with talent, but we were always so limited to who could showcase it because only those with stupid amounts of money could afford to distribute it. But nowadays people can create full blown masterpieces using a few supplies from Walmart or some decent recording equipment from Best Buy, and best of all it can be freely and widely accessed by billions of people. And it even creates this new way of fostering communities around these various niche productions and creations. As a musician and artist myself I often think about how grateful I am for that.

Once again thank you for the awesome content!!!💕

The last movie I saw in theatres was Little Women in 2019 and honestly, I don't miss going. Rates of flu, COVID, and RSV are rising in my area. Being next to others can be risky, particularly for those of us with vulnerable loved ones. The high price of a ticket and concession makes it hard to swallow. And I'm not one to care about the big screen, big audio experience. It's easier for the streamers to kill the theatres when the theatres aren't necessarily offering the best product.

Those of us who love seeing movies in theaters sure do miss the variety of films, sitting in a comfortable lazyboy recliner, eating food with extra butter on the popcorn and sometimes not worry about cleaning up with a broom, and enjoying the overall movie theater experience. Whether you love sound (Dolby Atmos quality) and/or picture quality (35mm, IMAX, 3D, or simply ANY screen bigger than a home theater screen), I do miss going to see a motion picture.

Surprisingly, I see movies by myself. I always had the freedom to see anything, as long as I know the movie schedule in advance.

I would have loved seeing the Glass Onion in theaters a couple of weeks ago. I knew it was a limited run, but my priorities had me preoccupied. These are DEFINITELY strange times that we live in.

I said all of this to illustrate how this medium (streaming networks) is currently changing the landscape of movie watching. Time will tell on who would win, just like CDs (now that streaming is popular, and artists have to tour a lot now a days), physical books and newspapers (all digital, even college textbooks are now eBooks or online), and possibly DVDs and blu-rays (4K and steel books). "These times are a changing...."

I love your video, because I thoroughly enjoyed your content! And I love your dress. Thanks for the video! 😊

I watched the film now and it’s so amazing. Still a shame how Netflix WASTED profit and a great theatrical experience for millions of people around the world.

While this isn’t the first Netflix film to be released in theaters and have issues with the big movie chains (ROMA) but this situation is a really strange case.

I wanted to watch it in theaters because I love the first one and it was so much fun in the cinema but I couldn’t find one that showed it. So I’m hoping for a rerelease or get a Netflix subscription. Also I’m someone who likes to own DVDs of a few select favorite movies and since many more movies are from streaming services with some it’s just not happening. Same with tv shows. No throwing a dvd in and start the movie. Now I either have to subscribe for one movie or hope it’s on tv sometime soon.

Hi Tyler big fan!!! If possible could you do a video about Savage X Fenty being sued over automatic renewal subscription? I would love to understand it more!

1. It was painful to see the Knives Out sequels go to Netflix because the first one was released by international indies globally who do the best and bespoke marketing in their territories. Netflix building on people’s backs who put some much care into making it a theatrical success and then fumble with this release by keeping it from theaters is honestly just pathetic. They don't know how to handle some of their films in the best possible way and it shows.

2. Warner's new management realized that theatrical benefits the entire value chain and now aim to reduce the number of streaming only films (RIP Batgirl) which i think is smart.

3. At the same time, it is concerning how adult and the majority of indie films are underperfoming at the box office. Bones and All, The Fabelmans, TAR, She Said, Triangle of Sadness, Banshees of Inisherin etc. should all be doing way better. I wonder when that "specialty" section will recover to pre-pandemic times.

4. Studios need to stay flexible. It was great to read the story of Paramount's Smile which was made to be a streaming film but after a successful test screening with a theatrical audience, they flipped it and made it this huge box office success. I think a fantastic film like Disney's Prey would have also done very well in theaters. Barbarian weirdly only got a theatrical release in North America and was a huge success but will go into streaming in the rest of the world.

5. In my country, some theaters used their times in the pandemic to renovate their spaces and make it more attractive to go to. I think theaters need to adapt into better social spaces and not just rely on the exclusivity of their films.

I love cinema and I still go 2-3 times a week. It will never die but evolve with the times.
