Online proctoring, often called remote proctoring, means using software and/or human proctors to monitor behavior during exams to prevent cheating and support test takers. Subscribe for more online education insights @honorlock5601
*There are four common types of proctoring we discuss in this video:*
- Browser lockdown software
- AI proctoring (automated)
- Live proctoring
- Blended proctoring
Each type has pros and cons, so it’s important to understand how they work and the different ways they prevent cheating on exams and assignments.
*Online proctoring tools that are offered in most platforms:*
Generally speaking, most online proctoring software can:
- Monitor/record behavior using the webcam
- Lockdown the browser
- Listen for sounds
- Verify identity
*Advanced online proctoring tools*
Some online proctoring companies offer advanced tools (in addition to those listed above) that can:
- Detect cell phones & other devices
- Block AI tools like ChatGPT & browser extensions
- Automatically find leaked test content
- Detect voices (not just listen for sounds)
- Blend AI and humans in a better way
*Can online proctoring prevent the use of AI tools like ChatGPT*
Some types of online proctoring software can block AI tools entirely or even allow them in some situations if they choose to (like during an interactive assignment). But to _effectively_ block them, you’ll need to use a combination of the “common” and “advanced” tools listed above. For example, browser lockdown software won’t work by itself because a test taker can still use their cell phone.
*Who uses online proctoring?*
Online proctoring is primarily used in higher education and professional education. Universities and colleges of all sizes leverage this online proctoring to prevent cheating on exams and to support students throughout. Similarly, organizations in various industries use online proctoring to protect professional certification exams, decrease testing overhead costs, and offer greater flexibility and convenience to test-takers.
*What exam formats can be proctored?*
Online proctoring works for almost any type of exam, even in-person exams. Whether exams are taken online using standard question types (multiple choice & true/false), in-person at a testing center, or exams requiring hands-on activities like giving virtual presentations, completing tasks in Excel and other software, and even using pen and paper for handwritten math and essays.
