Why Does Airbus Build Aircraft In The United States?

Airbus is Europe’s dominant power when it comes to aircraft manufacturing. The company is a direct rival to United States’ Boeing, and the two firms have been going head to head over the decades. However, Airbus has recently been ramping up its production on US soil. What spurred on this decision?

Last year I flew on the first Airbus US-built Aircraft. How did I found out? While flying, there was a plaque by the front door saying 1st Mobile, AL built plane.

I am 100% in favor it up because competition drives innovation and ultimately their customers (and us as passengers) are the winners. It also brings quality jobs and that money in turn goes into the local economies.

I did not know, Airbus was here in the USA. I'm glad to see that. I would think, they would expand to other US locations, or expand at the current ones. We have many other foreign manufacturers here now, so this makes sense(cents). Fantastic.
There's room for everyone!

Wichita has long been the building ground for airliners in the US. Many companies call Wichita home. Wichita State has a large aeronautical engineering program that feeds right to the Spirt, Leerjet, Bombardier, and Airbus facilities. I grew up in Wichita and went to Wichita State. Airbus is playing the long game, and it so far is paying off. Plus, we've seen a shift among the Big 3 in their fleet line up. A decade ago, it was all "Boeing or I'm not going" as American and Delta had all Boeing and MD fleets. But with their mergers with US Air and Northwest (respectively), they gained Airbus planes and placed orders for Airbus for the first time. Airbus's last hurdle in the US will be Southwest, but I think they're more likely to schedule flights into DFW than order an Airbus plane soon! (Just watch I'm wrong now that I've said it.)

I worked at the Brookley Aeroplex in Mobile... and loved watching those beautiful aircraft rolling out of paint... it was always fun to guess who had the next bird !!

There's another reason for Airbus' increasing US presence: expansion of the A220 (neé Bombardier C-Series) project. The A220-300 has positioned itself as a replacement for the A319, and a lot of airlines are very interested in buying the A220-300, including surprisingly strong interest from Southwest Airlines, of all things!

As an American I must admit that I have a slight bias for Boeing, plus my first flight when I was 3 years old was on a Boeing 757-200 and all of my flights till I was an adult were on B737-NGs. I had my first flight on an Airbus A320 at age 18 and really liked it. My favorite single isle though, has to be the Embraer 190 which I recently flew on last year and absolutely loved it.

I'm a Boeing fan but this is a very smart move by Airbus.

Airbus can also pay US workers in Alabama much less than they pay in Europe. It’s also much easier and cheaper to lay off employees in the USA compared to those in the EU.

To avoid Tariffs and so companys can say it’s made in America. Plus labor in France is expensive.

You’re welcome

Airbus' logistic system was designed with distributed sites in consideration, from day 1.
So instead of shipping wings engines fuselages to Toulouse or Hamburg, some are now headed to Mobile or Tianjin instead.
There are some pitfalls for this approach though, e.g. prone to tariff changes like Brexit, higher costs in some cases etc.

One thing I wish to see soon is Airbus single-aisle domination in Boeing territory, given the reputation of the MAX
I believe they should capitalize on it
Also, they managed to get a facility at the cost of just two 77Ws to build aircraft
Amazing job Airbus, and thanks to Simple Flying for letting me know about this wonderful facility in Mobile, Alabama

Pilatus are also producing some of their aircraft in Colorado for American market.
