Here's a brief 10-second commercial for WDAI 94.7 FM, "Chicago's Best Rock."

SIDE NOTES:

1. This was in the vein of other ABC-owned FM radio stations of the period, i.e. WPLJ 95.5 FM in New York, which went by the slogan "New York's Best Rock" - and even down to their logos.

2. The WDAI calls were originally meant for the Detroit FM outlet of ABC's, but due to a clerical error wound up in Chicago for the once and many times future WLS-FM. (Detroit's ABC FM station ended up with the calls WRIF.)

Voiceover by Pat St. John.

This aired on local Chicago TV on Wednesday, January 7th 1976.

About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:

The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,700+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:

WDAI ("Detroit's Auto Industry') was indeed intended for Motown, while WRIF (as in a guitar riff) was supposed to go to Chicago. WDAI switched call letters several times before returning to WLS-FM in 2008, while WRIF still rocks the Motor City...baby!

Yes, Steve Dahl was officially dismissed from WDAI on January 1, 1979, when ABC Radio Networks out of NYC changed WDAI's Format from Album Rock to Disco. The Disco Format lasted until May of 1980.

Rock on WDAI. The best rock station in Chicago during the 1970s. Hats off to "Buffalo" Dave Van Dyke!
