Τα ενετικά τείχη του Ηρακλείου άρχισαν να κατασκευάζονται το 1462 και ουσιαστικά ολοκληρώθηκαν το 1669, με την κατάληψη του Χάνδακα από τους Οθωμανούς. Τα τείχη έχουν περίγραμμα που προσομοιάζει ένα ισοσκελές τρίγωνο, με τη βορεινή πλευρά να είναι παραθαλάσσια και να αποτελεί τη βάση του τριγώνου και τον προμαχώνα Μαρτινέγκο όπου σήμερα βρίσκεται ο τάφος του Νίκου Καζαντζάκη.

The Venetian walls of Heraklion began to be built in 1462 and were actually completed in 1669, with the occupation of Chandakas by the Ottomans. The walls have an outline that resembles an isosceles triangle, with the north side being coastal and forming the base of the triangle and the Martinego bastion where today is the tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis.
