The Origins of British Fairies with Francis Young

When most of us close our eyes and think of Fairies, more often than not the winged fairies of 19th century Britain is what will come to mind. Over the last 160 years, some historians and folklorists have attempted to figure out just how the British conception of the fairy came to be. For the most part and in the minds of many, it seems like fairies were some sort of Pagan Celtic survival of Christianization. However, this might not be the case at all. Taking us through the Origins of Fairies in Britain, is Author and Historian Dr. Francis Young.

Honestly the whole Fistful o' Fairies themed for the podcast was quite nice to sit through as I liked hearing about each topic.
For this episode particularly, it felt interesting to hear the british side of the fairy origins (something that I had been curious about for a good while).

Pygmy theory love it, it explains Charlotte Burnes take on this. Of course Charlotte (maybe incorrectly) argues that fairies aren't common in Shropshire, but other fae are, which actually supports Francis's argument. Also this idea of survivalism seems to make a lot of sense.
Interesting regarding Francis's view on the Roman's. I have recently concluded that what we see as their religion is closer to superstition and we should really look at their philosophy. But more pertinently that what they have to say about Brittonic religion(s) also takes superstition and merges it with their own, which is then misinterpreted as a religion. This somewhat overlaps with the demonisation thesis which Francis mentions.

It’s funny because this position set out here re folk lore versus ‘authoritative’ recordings, makes me believe in folk lore even more! Especially having witnessed the main stream lies of the last few years and in deed, as an Irish descendent, the lies re our history! I’m very comfortable wearing tinfoil, I’d say it’s essential for the world we currently live in. Thank you for strengthening my faith! 😉
