I get it. I'm Afro-Latina and people look at me crazy because I don't fit into the box that they say Latinos are supposed to look like 🤦🏿‍♀️

I notice being mistreated initially by some people. Like as if there is an agreed value placed on darker skin people. I don't appreciate it. Especially because I am a really nice person 😢

You’d be surprised where this sheesh still happens. I was a department director at a prestigious New England university and the only woman of color. I was recruited particularly for that job because the institution needed a person of color to engage the community where it had recently bought out the long time residents and planned to build new graduate students dorm…(gentrification at its best). I took the job because it would mean free tuition should I or any of my family members decide to go back to college.
Although I always wore a suit, was very respectful and professional I experienced this nonsense constantly.
I was even told once when taking the elevator to the same meeting as a couple of two other old white men that the custodians needed to use the service elevators.
At another meeting with the SAME people I had attended in person meetings with they asked me if I was there to refresh the coffee and refreshments and clean up.
I was finally fed up and replied, “no, I’m the person who signs your paychecks.”They knew who I was they just hated the fact that a younger woman of color was their boss.
I left shortly after.

It’s happened to me several times before too, white people ask me for help as if I’m an employee at a store. It’s happened to me also by a Hispanic lady. And I’m Hispanic and fair to light skin…. Sooo, I don’t think that had to with skin color.

I haven't gotten that as much now that I'm older but when I was younger yes. Now I get asked if I'm a nanny or the help when I go out with my youngest because he's very light skin (looks exactly like his father) as if he isn't my son. Doesn't matter how you dress or act the assumptions are there. 😪

Idk I’m Hispanic and Italian and most people don’t think I even speak Spanish and I have been asked for help at dollar tree, target, and Walmart. Im white skinned and I don’t think it’s about skin tone all the time it could just be your wearing a polo shirt or business casual clothing. I was getting my oil changed wearing business casual and a customer assumed I was the manager and was yelling at me and I’m like I don’t even work here. So it’s more factors than just skin tone.

I’m kind of light skin colored, and I always get asked if I work there, wherever I go (usually happens when I go with my work clothes on… I wear a red poloshirt as a uniform, but it will happen at other times or even if the place’s uniform isn’t a red tshirt.) I just assume people see me as if I know what I’m doing. I mean, I have also asked people that I see sort of “putting things back” … or like “standing looking around”, if they work there. I hope they don’t find it offensive. I don’t when it happens to me (and it happens a lot). I either say “I don’t work here” (which the people get a bit embarrassed themselves for asking), or also say what do they need in case I might know (if it’s a place I’m familiar with).

Latinos have to stop crying and laugh at it!
I am sorry you feel a way but I don’t care when they do that because it means I’m looking basics. I feel more away when someone tells me why I don’t speak Spanish from my own people!

why dont they take their own and advice and "chill" like they tell other latinos who dont want to be called latine or latinx?

Oh please, he knows he never got mistaken for an employee at Target, unless he was also wearing a red shirt and khaki pants that day. Notice when the lady said Target has a uniform, he immediately switched to how he gets mistaken for an employee all the time at the 99 cents store, which makes more sense as most of the workers there are Latino and don't wear a uniform. He just wants to play the victim. The pearls say it all.

When some white person asks you that turn the question to them: oh! I was just asking you the same question! They get confused af

People think all Latinos got pale skin and they don't. Latinos come in all different shades and hair textures.

I start to think, for me races don't exist, I mean, I 'm Latina, my parents are Venezuelan, I'm Venezuelan, I'm too white and with slightly Asian eyes with an Arab grandfather, what is my race then?

Yes, well you stereotype whites too! it goes both ways! My grandparents didn't get any government assistance. They came here legally.
