Common Terminal (C): The C terminal is the common connection point for both the compressor and fan motor capacitors. It is usually connected to the neutral or ground of the AC unit's power supply.

Wiring connection for a dual capacitor in an AC unit:

Power Supply: Connect the live wire (usually black) to one side of the capacitor, and the neutral wire (usually white) to the common terminal (C) of the dual capacitor.

Good explanation except for one point: the capacitor does NOT turn off after the motor starts. Current flows through the capacitor to the starting winding the entire time the motor is running. The capacitor causes a phase shift in the current going to the starting winding relative to the run winding. The run winding carries the heavier current.

There are single phase motors for other applications that have a centrifugal switch that DOES disconnect the capacitor after the motor gets up to speed, but air conditioner motors don’t have that.

I got a GE window unit ... Which wasn't working. Opened up. Changed capacitor. Didn't work. Saw this video. Only to see GE had switch the wiring on the compressor which wasn't firing up. Great video

Now I really undersrand what the capacitor does after seeinv its practical application. In school they just say, " a Capacitor is used to store charge" but never show any 0rqctical application of this.
