63 Russian soldiers killed in New Year’s Eve attack on barracks in Donetsk

Dozens of Russian troops were killed by Ukrainian forces in an occupied part of the country on New Year’s Eve in what could be the deadliest attack on Russian forces in months. NBC News’ Matt Bradley breaks down how Russia is responding and what Ukrainian officials are saying led to the deadly attack.

The Russian conscripts’ barracks was an abandon technical college with large classrooms, parking lot and near cell towers for communications. The Ukrainians waited until the pings on the cell tower from all the conscripts calling home showed the technical school was heavy occupied. The HIMARS rockets hit the technical school about two minutes after midnight during the New Year’s celebration.

Russia claimed 63 loses. Ukraine reported that they killed over 200 Russian soldiers in the bombing of the vocational school where an entire company was camped out.

When the Russian submarine Kursk sank in a training exercise the Russians said at first that the whole crew had been saved. When the Russian cruiser Moskva sank, the Russians said that it was because of an onboard fire and that only one person died. The Russians said that the HIMARS attack killed only 63 people.

Such losses as in Makiivka happen to the Russian army not for the first time, and not even for the second time. There were many strikes, but the generals do not care about the personnel, instead they announce another mobilization.
