They practice a set amount of steps in between the hurdles, so when it is off you lose ur muscle memory

As a hurdler myself, if that hurdle is even a tiny bit off, it messes up your steps completely. If you mess up your steps, it’s impossible to get back into them. You’ll stutter-step before every other hurdle and lose a ton of time.

I remember watching something similar with the Olympics on Gymnastic vault. Nearly every single girl that went was falling and not landing right....Finally after way too many girls kept landing on their knees and nearly injuring themselves they figured out that the vault was never set to the proper height. It was horrible seeing all the girls completely shaken and thrown off their game. The ones that performed on the improper height got to try again..but...it really felt like the damage had been done. You practice something every single day and rely so heavily on muscle memory...It was so sad and frustrating to watch the girls be mentally shaken. Not to mention dangerous to the athletes.
