Unraveling the Fragility of Conditioned Love

Love, they say, is a complex concept. It's often used as a medium of exchange, with conditions attached.

There's a familiarity in the phrase 'I will love you if you love me back'. Or the self-inflicted condition, 'I will love myself, provided I make no mistakes'.

This is a brittle version of love, one that is easily broken, easily shifted. It's a love that can't offer a lasting refuge, because its existence is dependent on conditions that can change in an instant.

The fragility of this kind of love, it's argued, can't be the embodiment of 'metta'. Metta suggests, most profoundly, that every life holds importance.

Metta doesn't require you to like everyone, or even anyone. But it acknowledges that our lives are intertwined, that we impact one another.
