Life isn't unique, what's actually unique is Earth's relative long term stability. In 4 billion years nothing catastrophic enough to end it all completely has happened. There have been mass extinctions sure, but nothing has 100% sterilized this planet like Mars or Venus, at least not yet. That's what makes Earth unique, it's been relatively safe for such a long unbroken chain of time.

It's not life that's unique, it's more multicellular life and then intelligent life that seems rare.

I love the common sense Neil brings to science. Thanks for the short video.

Its always scary to think about us being one of the later generations of the life of our universe. Imagine there were galaxies full of life and they all died out, and then we come at the later stage when most galactic empires have already died from the inside.

The old Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson was the best... You can hear the love and appreciation for science in his tone.

The observable universe is 13.7 billion years old. So 200 million years or 0.2B is one 69th of that. Nice.

This made me feel so insignificant. But in the same moment it made me feel special meaning that how so many events had to occur for me to be alive. Love my earth.

It's crazy how people still think the earth is only 6, 000 years old

It’s crazy to think how quick life really developed, and not just that but how much it’s achieved in such a short period of time. Thanks Neil! 🙏🙏🙏

Imagine a cosmic entity blinks and suddenly the molten rock is now covered in plastic

Get this 50 years ago I told my teacher that the continents were once connected. I got repermaned for my observation. She told our class that although the continents looked like that, they were never connected. From that day forward, I realized that to be smart was not appreciated. I was in third grade at the time.

Neil deGrasse Tyson is an absolute National Treasure! 😊.. And to be honest I really can't think of anyone who's more influential and inspirational in our country. Can anyone named anyone equivalent to him, . I don't think it's even close.
I have no doubt that Neil deGrasse Tyson inspired the next deGrasse Tyson just like Carl Sagan did for Neil.. and he wouldn't surprise me if the next Neil deGrasse Tyson either invents or discover something that is going to change the world / save the world. 😊

The bottom of this comment section is insanely funny 😂

It's fair to say it took 200 million years to form single cell organisms, not multicellular, for those you have to wait another 2.6 billion years, 1.1 ish billion years ago. We can assume that single cell organisms might be common and not that difficult to form but multicellular life is way more difficult.

Life began relatively quick on Earth, but the fact we haven’t seen no forms of life elsewhere, in this immense Universe, makes me appreciate the blessing we were given to just exist and witness the complicated yet beautiful thing that is “life”

I can listen to Neil speak all day long and not get bored

It’s actually even more complex, as there’s an overlap between when the world still saw heavy bombardment after life should’ve started already, and why one of the theories that is has been seeded extraterrestrially (not as in aliens but just coming from outside earth somewhere) seems fairly prominent.

No way we're all alone out here...
I refuse to believe it.
