I remember when Romario came back at PSV a week late from a break, just before the important European match against AEK Athens. The journalists were all over him. In a tv interview he just said:"I'm sorry. I'll score three goals against AEK". And he did just that, he scored a hattrick.

Romário, such a badass. "You can write it down, we are traveling to the USA today for the World Cup, if we lose it, that's on me!" And he went there and won it all!

Romário was a party animal, but never drank alcohol or did drugs, which really helped not hindering his longevity, playing until his forties.

I'm from Barcelona. My father had a friend who used to work for FC Barcelona 90's era, on a role of "chico para todo". Probably the most accurate translation would be someone who is always available to solve different situations and issues that players could got anytime. A kind of "The Wolf" from Pulp Fiction. From now we're gonna call this guy like that. I had memories from childhood that he always carried a pager from those times or "beeper". He was doing a good money for that work, but it was a hard one. He had to be available almost 24/7 for the club. And now here it comes the fun fact. On the middle of the midnight, quite often he was called upon to manage this situation: Romario was spotted dancing and partying at Silvi's, one of the most famous nightclubs in Castelldefels, a suburban coast town nearby Barcelona. "The Wolf" had a mission. To pick-up Romario from the nightclub at 5 a.m. and put it straight away not to Romario's place, but to Princesa Sofia hotel (it's literally the closest hotel to Camp Nou, just few steps away from the stadium). There, the club always have been a permanent room available for this kind of "situations". The very next morning, the team probably had a light workouts and match management before lunch, meanwhile Romario was sleeping and recovering himself from last night. Johan Cruyff was the manager of the club those times (season 93/94). He was very aware of this story but he was OK with that. "Only God Forgives" I guess. Then, Romario played on the starting rotation and used to score 2 or 3 goals regularly. Actually he scored plenty of goals that season. He was probably the best player in the world in 1994.

Romario is the type of guy that would never study for a test at school but would get A+

Romario was doing cardio dancing in clubs while the other were being lazy in their bed. So maybe he trained harder then anyone else!

Romário was the reason I quit pursuing a pro football career. As a junior player in Vasco in the 1980s, I watched him destroy players daily in training and matches. He was just a teenager and unstoppable. Vasco defenders said he had springs on his knees. His ability to dribble at speed with his lower center of gravity was unreal. Then he would stop in front of the goalkeeper and just pass the ball into the net. Forget stealing the ball from him, defenders couldn't even foul him. I could train 24 hours per day, daily, and never get close to what he did routinely. Geniuses are indeed rare.

In 1994 Romario said that if Brasil didn't win the WC it was his responsability, we have a saying in brazil that Romário talked a lot, fought twice as much, and played three times as hard.

Great comp, a funny fact left aside was when Romario was both the coach and still a player of Vasco, and he subbed himself into the game claiming the other striker was playing like shit lol

As a Vasco fan, I grew up watching him play live. This man is the raw definition of a Striker. What a player. I was at the stadium when he scored his 1000th, it was insane!

When he arrived in Barcelona he scored 17 goals in 8 pre-championship matches. Then he scored 3 goals in the first championship match. So, 20 goals in his first 9 games for Barcelona. The three goals of that first champ match were just outstanding

Romario was the absolute best striker I have ever seen....since 1993 . This guy together with Hristo Stoichkov 😂 was the most Alpha Striker team to ever play....but yes, Romario was naturally beyond the rest.... technically perfect, ambidextrous, long distance, headers, volleys, bicycle kicks....he would cost 120-200 Million Euro in today's times.

Probably the best pure finisher I've ever seen. He really could score from ridiculous angles, with ridiculous touches.

This is very topical. I saw Michael Owen say the other day that there has been a huge shift towards athleticism in football recently and that the skill level is not as high. I totally agree with him. Romario is a classic example of this, not a good trainer but an incredible level of natural ability and skill.

I had the privilege to see Romario plays. He was something completely out of this world.
This video makes real justice for the legend!
And it isn't arrogance, if he had 10% of the care Cr7 has.
We would see him with a crazy number of ballon d'ors and Fifa Best. In an era that has legends everywhere!

Romário is my spirit animal when it comes to fútbol. I always felt, even as a kid, that a lot of fans, journalists, and players love overcomplicating the game, where they forget the whole point of the game is to kick the ball into the net. You don't need Messi's moves to be lethal. I'm glad I'm not the only person that thinks this as Romário has displayed.

I know Romario is a top 5 all timer however, I didn’t realise he was a one man match winning machine everywhere he played! Not only that, he told the President’s when he’ll train, how many goals he’d score the next game - while partying like the Rolling Stones on tour in their heyday! I don’t think I’ve seen any ‘baller demonstrating such planet sized cojones! What a guy 👍🏻
