I was listening to this song as I was going through my old stuff and organizing my storage. I found a letter I wrote for dad when I was a kid. Based on my handwriting and spelling I think it’s from around 3rd or 4th grade. It was a list of reasons why his feelings mattered and why he should stick around and not die. I had overheard him saying something similar to suicidal ideation. In the list of reasons was “if you don’t wake up in the morning who will listen to my nonesense?” “If you don’t wake up in the morning who will make this dark and scary place less dark and scary?” “If you don’t wake up in the morning how will I?” I didn’t know this as a kid but my dad was severely depressed because of the abuse my mother put him through. But he didn’t walk away and leave because he didn’t want to leave us with her. My dad kept that letter his whole life. I’m 24 and I lost him in early 2019 from cancer. By 2019 he was fighting so hard to stay alive, even though his depression never left. I learned my dad was human at such a young age. And while I shouldn’t have had to been the only person there for my dad to keep him from making that choice, I’m so glad I did. Im so glad we were both there for each other. I miss him.
