Next time do this over a few days by doing small layers. This allows all the water to freeze into ice. Otherwise you end up with a ice layer over water like a frozen lake.

Quick tip from someone who used to work in a rink use thin layers of water so it is frozen all the way through and you dont have a pond to fall through

It's been so warm this winter. We have hardly any snow on the ground and it's going to be above freezing tomorrow. Usually we would have 30 cm by now

Definitely add less water at the start. Allow a layer to freeze thoroughly before adding a new layer.
Great idea & looks like fun!!

Being from S Texas, I am forever fascinated by people who not only function in cold weather, but choose to be out in it for fun!
You are a wonderful father! You're children will remember these memories for the rest of their lives. Long live great parents

Man, you are an amazing dad.
(Ok, I’m getting real tired of people saying a lot of things just because I said this. I said this because there are a lot of things that he does that makes him look like a good dad. I was comparing him to my dad because he was awful, so if he is actually like this, he would be a good dad.)

Layering the ice is key to a solid freeze, don't just dump all the water at once! Your dedication to making a backyard ice rink is impressive, keep up the good work!

We’ve made backyard ice rinks before. The key is to only put an inch or two of water at a time and let it freeze in layers instead of all at once because ice is an insulator and will freeze on the top layer but prevent the bottom layers from freezing

Textbook example of a GREAT father. I guarantee your kids will look back on their backyard hockey rink with fond memories for their entire lives.

Well done, dad!!!

Good job, but, if you see the thickness of the ice ...put just a little less water than that thickness to start...when that freezes add about a 1/4 inch at a time... you started with to much thermal mass. Add thin layers often and you'll get thicker, stronger, smoother I spent a few hours watching ice put down in a professional ring and they literally used a regular hose and that's all they did...over and over....

I always felt bad for my dad not being able to skate after working so hard on the rink but I could, this reminded me of that, hope you handle these little man realities well

If your having troubles freezing it try doing it in layers to help it freeze all the way through. In Canada winter lasts long enough that it should last along tome
