I’m from Georgia and my family came from North Carolina after losing land in 1836, so I’m a southerner through and through. I met friends in Chicago and took them down to Georgia. This, was for some reason the song that came in their head. I took them to the Appalachias, a property in Spalding County, Saint Simons, and Lake Lanier. They loved it.

I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee,
I’m going to Louisiana, my true love for to see
It rained all night the day I left, the weather it was dry
The sun so hot I froze to death; Susanna, don’t you cry.
Oh, Susanna, don’t you cry for me
cos’ I come from Alabama
With my banjo on my knee.
had a dream the other night when everything was still,
I thought I saw Susanna coming up the hill,
A buck wheat cake was in her mouth, a tear was in her eye,
I said I’m coming from the south, Susanna don’t you cry.
I soon will be in New Orleans and then I’ll look around
And when I find my Susanna, I’ll fall upon the ground
But if I do not find her, this man will surely die
And when I’m dead and buried, Susanna don’t you cry.

I come from Alabama
With a banjo on my knee ( “Banjo on my knee” he is a minstrel)
I’m going to Louisiana
My true love for to see
It rained all night the day I left (the conflicting lyrics show how his life is upside down)
The weather it was dry
The sun so hot I froze myself
Susanna, don’t you cry

Oh! Susanna
Oh! don’t you cry for me
For I come from Alabama
With my banjo on my knee

I had a dream the other night
When everything was still
I thought I saw Susanna
Coming down the hill
The buckwheat cake was in her mouth (Buckwheat cake traditional southern wedding cake in the 1800’s. )
The tear was in her eye (she is wedding to a man she does not truly love for the security of marriage)
I said I’m coming from the South
Susanna don’t you cry

Oh! Susanna
Oh! don’t you cry for me
For I come from Alabama
With my banjo on my knee

Oh I soon will be in New Orleans and then I’ll look around
And when I find my Susanna, I’ll fall upon the ground
But if I do not find her, this man will surely die
And when I’m dead and buried, Susanna don’t you cry (These lyrics are self explanatory if you view them as a love shattered)

Oh! Susanna
Oh! don’t you cry for me
For I come from Alabama
With my banjo on my knee

Old Zack, he came to Utah, way back in seventy three,
A right good Mormon gentleman and a bishop too was he.
He drove a locomotive for the D. and R. G.,
With women he was popular, as popular as could be.

And when he'd whistle *train whistle* Mamma'd understand
That Zack was headed homeward on the Denver and Rio Grande.

Here’s the version of the original lyrics which I rewrote to not include offensive language.

Oh, I come from Alabama
With my banjo on my knee
I'm going to Louisiana
My true love for to see
Oh it rained all night the day I left
The weather it was dry
The sun so hot, I froze to death
Susanna, don't you cry

CHORUS:
Oh! Susanna, oh! don't you cry for me,
For I come from Alabama with my banjo on my knee.

Oh I jumped aboard the telegraph, And traveled down the river, The current's force magnified, Made me quake and shiver; The engine broke, the horse ran off, I truly thought I'd die, I shut my eyes and held my breath, Susanna, don't you cry.

CHORUS:
Oh! Susanna, oh! don't you cry for me,
For I come from Alabama with my banjo on my knee.

I had a dream the other night, When everything was still; I thought I saw Susanna, She was coming down the hill. A buckwheat cake was in her mouth, A tear were in her eye, She said she's coming from the South, Susanna, don't you cry.

CHORUS:
Oh! Susanna, oh! don't you cry for me,
For I come from Alabama with my banjo on my knee.

Soon, I'll be in New Orleans, And then I'II look around, And when I find Susanna,
‘I’ll fall upon the ground. But if I do not find her, This man will surely die, and when I'm dead and buried, Susanna, don't you cry.

I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee.
I’m going to loo-zee-ana (Louisiana) my-y true love for to see.
It rained all night the day I left, the weather it was dry.
The sun’s so hot I froze to death, Susanna don’t you cry!
Oh! Susanna! Don’t ya cry for me!
I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee.
Oh! Susanna! Don’t ya cry for me!
I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee.

Well I jumped up on the telly-graph (telegraph) to travel down the river.
The electric fluid magnified and killed 500 chiggers. (originally a slur)
The bulgine burst, the horse ran off, I surely thought I’d die.
So I held my eyes to close my breath, Susanna don’t you cry!
Oh! Susanna! Don’t ya cry for me!
I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee.
Oh! Susanna! Don’t ya cry for me!
I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee.

I had a dream the other night that everything was still.
And then I saw Susanna dear a-running down a hill.
The buckwheat cake was in her mouth, the tear was in her eye.
I said “I’m coming from the south!” Susanna don’t you cry!
Oh! Susanna! Don’t ya cry for me!
I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee.
Oh! Susanna! Don’t ya cry for me!
I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee.

I soon will be in New Or-leens (Orleans), and then I’ll look around.
And when I find Susanna I will fall upon the ground.
And if I do not find her, the-en I will surely die.
And when I’m dead and buried, Susanna don’t you cry!
Oh! Susanna! Don’t ya cry for me!
I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee.
Oh! Susanna! Don’t ya cry for me!
I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee.
