After a year of silence following the departure of ATLA creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko from the project, we have finally got some news about Netflix’s impending, non-animated version of the series. The streaming giant recently revealed a new showrunner and writer in experienced producer Albert Kim, gave us a list of producers and directors, and the names and roles of the core cast...

So let’s take a look at the new stars of the series and dive into their credits and backgrounds. We’ve got Kiawentiio and Ian Ousley as the brother and sister duo from the Southern Water Tribe, Katara and Sokka, Dallas Liu as the scarred and traumatized part-time villain, Prince Zuko, and finally newcomer Gordon Cormier as the little boy out of time who is fated to master and unify the four elements: Ang. Together they make up a strong cast who should give nervous fans a little respite from the troubled production of the series so far.

The series adapts the wildly popular three season Nickelodeon animated show from 2005. The original has sustained its popularity over the past fifteen years, despite a disastrous and poorly received big screen version from M. Night Shyamalan, and it’s exciting for fans to finally have some fresh information on the new take. We’ll also take a look at some words from Albert Kim about his background with the original show and what he hopes to achieve for both existing fans and a whole new generation of viewers.

Chapters:

2:20 Gordon Cormier as Ang
2:53 Kiawentiio as Katara
3:16 Ian Ousley as Sokka

I just want The Rock or Terry Crews as the actor playing Toph in the Ember Island play

Just hope they take their time with the special effects of bending elements and other stuff

Let's be honest no live-action adaptation could ever replace or compare to the animated masterpiece. All we can do is hope that with a TV show live-action adaptation it will be better than trying to cram everything into a 2-hour movie which was impossible from the start.

I'm honestly more concerned with the casting of Iroh and Suki

I read somewhere the "Creative Differences" was that Netflix wanted Zuko's turn to come sooner so they can take advantage of the fan shipping of him and Katara. They want the two to be more of a thing and the love triangle to be a bigger part of the story and the creators of the show said it would get in the way of the overall story.

The cast looks great, hopefully they can act good as well

In terms of appearance, they just cast Sokka as Sokka and I love it.

I'm more concerned about the original creators leaving the project due to creative differences... so that made my hope for the same greatness the cartoon gave go down...but the actors look pretty spot on

it’s crazy how people are whining over the cast when it’s the most accurate casting we’ve seen for ATLA

both Sokka and Katara actors are indigenous, Zuko is chinese and Aang is asian as well (filipino)

not to mention the ages of the actors for Aang and Katara are accurate as well, with Aang being 12 and Katara 14

and honestly they look pretty good for the parts they’re playing, all this atla resurgence makes me hype for the animated movie and the new projects that are being worked on

edit: and i personally hope that one day, if all this goes well, they start to work on Korra. Give her a live action retelling or a new movie, i hope that’ll come to pass one day

The OG creators left the project. It's probably going to be a dumpster fire.

That’s great but who is going to sing the secret tunnel song?

Am I the only one who thinks this cast doesn't give off avatar vibes?

What’s the point of making a live action when the cartoon is perfect, I swear people always gotta ruin our childhood shows

They should get the people who played them in the movie (Noah Ringer Nicola Peltz Jackson Rathbone Dev Patel etc) to reprise their roles in the live action series

In the Ember island players episode! :D

we dont need a live action reimagination, wokefied version of Avatar! A new animated show that continues after the 100 year war, or team avatar as adults made by the same people as before would be awesome!

Looks good im kinda mad about the original producers going their own way because of creative differences but the new guy actually enjoying the show with his kid and actually being tied to the original series im excited to say the least. I just hope they stay on point with the story and not deviate to far lol

Avatar the Last Airbender is my favorite show, and quite frankly, I believe it to be the best show ever created. However, history repeats itself, and I can tell that the Netflix adaptation will be terrible. From what I’ve read and heard, it feels like the people working on the show care more about checking boxes than making anything that can come close to the standard the original show set.
