Have Thine Own Way, Lord | Songs and Everlasting Joy

Adelaide Pollard was at a prayer meeting in the early 1900's when an elderly lady, instead of asking for blessings from the Lord, prayed "It doesn't matter what You bring into our lives, Lord. Just have Your own way with us." This phrase rang so clearly in her mind that, before she was even home for the evening, several of the verses had formed in her mind. When she got home, she completed the verses for the hymn.

This is one of the hardest things to do - to allow God to have His way with us. We so love our own way and usually believe it is the best way for us. But when we are truly a Christian, we must have faith that God's way is what is best for us. May He help us all to allow Him to have His own way in our lives.

There is an Italian version of this hymn that I used to listen to on you- tube when I was learning Italian.
I have two adult daughters and both planned trips to Rome for my wife and I when we were both still working in stressful conditions.

On the second Italian holiday I bought some hymn books to bring home to learn Italian hymns as a cure for the stress of being a mathematic teacher.

I was in Rome with my younger daughter who has the beautiful Italian surname
"Consiglio"

Her husband is Maltese but he looks Italian and he played that part so well that we had plenty to laugh about all week long.
I still have the Italian music books and this hymn appears in one called
" Inni di Lode " .
I can follow the Italian chord system on my left hand and pick out the melody by ear on a keyboard.
They sometimes change a few notes to fit the Italian better, so my ear conflicts with the notation !

Sadly my wife could not come with us and cancelled her flight to free up her seat at the last minute.
I slept alone in a double bed, eating two portions of breakfast as humorous way to start each morning without her joyful laughter. Making Ruth laugh at a sad time in her life was the purpose of that holiday when we planned it.

But now I am permanently without her and breakfast is always a struggle. Crying uses lots of calories so I still eat double in her memory, she taught me well.
I cannot sing this song in all honesty because I used to watch Ruth every Sunday in church.
If any hymn like this was chosen I could see her reading, listening but missing out any words that she said were " too serious to sing honestly".

How could I not fall deeply in love with a girl who was that honest when I met her at age18 ???

My daughters agree that their mum was the most honest person they have known personally to date.
They know I will never meet such honesty again at my age because it is child-LIKE by definition.

I used to tell Rutg that we I sing hymns like this because we WANT it to be true. I call that "naked truth", not normally suitable for the internet.

I want to love God that much, but I am just a man ... a husband ... a dad!
And now I am just a grieving widower!

So I used to sing this hymn in ITALIAN in the kitchen while she was busy with pots and pans.
That way she could recognise the tune but not the word for a potter that sounds more like a VASE-maker .
The worst reaction might be for her to break her favorite porcelain VASE in front of me to explain in actions without words exaxtly what I was singing. I can ALMOST smile, except for the fact that I did break that vase recently by accident.

If you can find and sing an Italian version some time before I reach 100 in 35 years time it might just make me smile again enough to to listen and join in.

Sadly these words are now TOO TRUE for me to sing without an excess of emotion. I promised my daughters I would avoid tears that the neighbours might see and report back to them as "clinical depression" . Both daughters are UK trained in pharmacy and both agree in prescribing large doses of TLC, before resorting to prescribed chemicals. They both agree that faithful prayers and soothing music are a a safer remedy for my current situation. I have already been examined by three NHS doctors and told each time that bereavement is "not an illness". I must get through it, naturally if posdible, and it cannot be cut short.

God will continue to lead you daily. But he will test your faith in Him when you sing songs like this in words that you and I already understand.

If you sing in Italian, God will not need to test you. God invented Italian to make the world a happier place... try it next time you feel sad singing a hymn. It worked for me ... once.
