We all say football has gone soft, but these clips give the majority of us all the same reaction of ooh fuck me he’s caught him there how lucky is he going to be hell be lucky to escape a red there 😂 I hate how happily refs, especially English referees in comparison to the overseas refs, blow up for every little bit of contact but there’s no balance between dangerous challenges like these and laughably weak fouls, plus the lack of consistency from referee to referee and week to week. Every week there seems to be headlines about PL referees not following their own or the collective precedent set the game week before with different outcomes for similar scenarios, refs have it harder than most people who’ve never officiated a game before can truly appreciate or understand, they have had to change and adapt what the role of match officials, including assistant referees running the lines and the 4th official on the touchline, because the game has changed. But I’m sure most people’s biggest aggravation with referees, particularly in the EPL as it’s the league I personally watch and is most globally observed, but referees are too inconsistent with game changing decisions, the VAR assistance introduced to limit errors having countless problems, the laws of the game being interpreted on a case to case basis rather than being rigid guidelines and some referees trying to dominate the spotlight. Every referee is told from minute 1 of day 1 of FA Referees Training that an officials priority is to be invisible but authoritative, making justifiable ad hoc decisions as the game is played, keeping the game flowing and most importantly the players as safe as possible by keeping control, not letting tension and anger bubble over into a brawl but simultaneously being a unseen entity policing the laws as needed
