I thought a smoke signal was controlling the smoke in a way that when you cover the fire with a wet blanket or something and heave it up and down over the fire to make smoke ball type things

It’s a constant stream of smoke but by controling it you make it like - - - - - - - -
Lol best I can do to explain but I thought that’s how you tell someone is in distress or needs help..hence why it’s called smoke signals lol otherwise it just looks like a regular fire
