Tobacco Mosaic “Virus” - The beginning & end of virology

The Tobacco Mosaic "Virus" is said to be the first "virus" ever discovered. The particle has even been purified and biochemically characterised.

I decided to go back to the original studies from the late 1800s and I found more than just a few problems with the claims that they found a "virus".

Secondly, I wanted to ask you if have come across the history of the electron microscope as I have found some conflicting history there as well in my research(shocker)? It seems that history, again, has been altered attempting to eliminate Vladimir Zworykin from the origin story of the EM (1940), and instead giving all credit to Max Knoll and Ernst Ruska (1931), which of course aids in crafting the germ theory story. Much more to say, but I'll keep it brief here.

My friend's goldfish kept wasting away and dying; it appeared to him that a virus might be responsible. To combat the virus he washed his aquarium and gravel every week with plenty of soapy water. I explained that even trace residues of the surfactants in detergent act upon the mucous on fish gills. His fish were dying of oxygen starvation. For some psychological reason he was unable to accept that cleanliness can be unhealthful, and he continued his cleaning routine until he finally gave up on keeping fish.

This little gem showing up on my feed was perfect timing.
I've realised recently, that all of our current views on just about everything, are based on very old science. Mostly, we aren't updating our views or text even though science has the capabilities WAY WAY beyond what the scientific father's could ever have imagined..
Why? Why are people so opposed to saying early science was flawed, or ok for its time, but now we KNOW better? Very strange.

I think all these experiments need to be run again from the beginning, with control experiments and better science overall.
Only in this way will the answers flow out whatever they may be.
Up until that point it points at large and embarrassing holes in the science, but such criticism is not in itself a scientific experiment.
I don't know who could do them but it would be interesting to really test this out and shake it to the roots until certainty is achieved.

Has anyone heard it scientifically explained exactly what mechanisms these "viruses" use to produce the symptoms of the various illnesses? As pronounced as some symptoms are, such as death, it shouldn't be any mystery as to what causes them. How and why does a virus cause a runny nose with sore throat for example, and exactly what can a virus do that makes my headache? Viruses are considered neither alive nor dead, and cannot reproduce on their own, so precisely how do they produce these symptoms they are blamed for?
Are there any scientists trying to explain exactly how, why & what the viruses alledgedly do that makes us feel sick? It's time they proved it!
To me, these "symptoms" are normal detox/elimination processes, that the body uses to cleanse itself of injested physical/emotional toxins and "dead food".
