Whaaat? There are less than 11 million Kims? I thought it would be like 40-50% of Korean citizens! I think the two syllable family names sound cool too, like an ancient Korean clan who are nobles.

My last name is Tan and when I met my taekwondo great grand master for the first time, he was very surprised to meet someone with the last name Tan. He commented that it was very rare and I should be happy to have such a good name.

I thought Han, Seung, Gu, Oh are also less common surnames but the K dramas I saw had more of them than the popular ones like 'It's okay to not be okay', BOF, My Strange Hero, etc that made me think maybe they are actually the popular ones besides Kim, Lee, Park and Choi.
