Basic summary for the Sakabato: it's a sword especially made for Himura so that he can't kill anyone else anymore and to atone for his murders by killing evil and innocent people many years ago, and since the blade is reversed it can't do much damage without switching to the backside so in a way it's is lethal for yourself which is perfect for representing Himura's guilt. He only uses the sharp side to cut inanimate and non-living objects if he needs to.

To clarify: A standard katana is a single-edged blade with its edge on the outside curve. A sakabato has its edge on the inside curve, which is not the side of the blade a samurai normally uses. So it's a less-lethal blade, but not a non-lethal one. It can still cut, but only if its user remembers to use the right (which to him is wrong) side.
