What are the biggest challenges to Palestinian statehood? | DW News

Spain, Norway and Ireland join some 140 other countries in officially recognizing Palestinian statehood. But what exactly does their recognition mean for the everyday life of Palestinians? DW talks to Martin Kobler, a retired German ambassador and former German representative with the Palestinian Authorities.

I am not against recognition of Palestine. But doesn't telling a country to stop the operation while rockets are constantly being fired at it mean that I don't recognize your right to self-defense? You may find Israeli operations harsh, but can you explain what the point is if international law is binding on only one party? Suppose Israel abandons the operation, do you think Hamas will stop firing rockets? Ask yourself this honestly.

The USA and its vassals supported the secession of Kosovo, but do not support the secession of Donetsk and Luhansk. The USA and its vassals recognized state of Israel but do not recognize state of Palestine. Such inconsistent international politics has made international laws and court meaningless.

Sweden for an example recognized Palestine in 2014 but that didn't change anything. The Israeli government has never cared what anyone else say or think. The entire world could recognize Palestine and Israel would still not ben their knee.

The biggest challenges to a Palestinian state are: A) Hamas (which unexplicably was not mentioned). So long as they are relevant and their goal is the destruction of Israel, Israel will not allow such state. B) Netanyahu and the extreme and racist Israeli right. So long as they are able to stay in power, there will not be a Palestinian state. Unfortunately, each of them makes the other one stronger and those on both sides that want a two-state solution irrelevant. BTW, Oslo was a great first step in the dirrection of a solution. Trying to determine the end stage at that time would have ben the biggest mistake. And don't forget that the Palestinians were offered statehood on 97% of their territory (plus compensation on the remaining 3%) in 2000 and they rejected it.
