Thank you soooo much! I'd previously found a technique online that did this reset via the terminal; it worked fine, but your well-described method is much easier. Cheers for that!

But how can we navigate the menus when our controller is messed up. Think we are missing something critical here??

Very helpful tutorial. I don’t need to reset mines currently, but wanted a refresher on how to just incase I ever needed to!

You could always SSH into the pi and "sudo reboot now" to restart? Turning off like that could damage the data or SD card.

My controller works on the main screen but as soon as I leave and enter a game it stops working I get the message “ configure override loaded” I did the main reset and still nothing. Odd thing is a key board works fine on games and main screen.

Hi, this worked for most emulators except the Mupen64Plys. I cannot configure any N64 games to my Arcade controller.

I need to do it. I copied my configs and I don't use controller 0 anymore wich comes with problems where only 0 is monitored.

Followed your instructions all the way through but my analog sticks just won’t work. Everything else on the controller works perfectly.

We need help figuring out how to get back to the menu in a game after we have set up our controller differently. Can you help us figure out what that configuration would be, or what button functions that would be for us to get out of a game.

There's gotta be something wrong with the blue side (player 1). No matter what I do it won't configure the joystick for shit. But Player 2 side works fine. I even switched out the joysticks themselves and it doesnt make a difference.

I followed the directions to a T but upon clicking 'perform reboot' I was brought to a rainbow colored screen where the system was completely frozen in time.

I'm using computers for many decades.. the controller mapping and input handling in RetroPie / Emulationstation is the worst thing I ever came across. Why is it, that a connected keyboard does not work out of the box, this is ridiculous. Why is it, that special menu hotkey can only be assigned to one controller, why are these special keys not present on the keyboard as well by default (as an emergency solution)? Why do A/B button mappings suddenly switch? Why are there no hints on the screen to show what to press. It all makes no sense to me and I keep pulling my hair with these things, which are way more intuitive in other emulation software. And please do not get the idea to connect different controllers or remove keyboard at all, you're totally screwed.. it's actually sad. It's surely been a lot of effort to put these emulation distributions together, but actual usability is not there yet in my opinion.

I ran the RetroPie update from the system, now the Pi is downloading trillions of files and started to compile source code for each packet it seems.. it's doing that for ages now, what the hell.
