Does Stolen Valor make you mad? If yes, why?

As a Delta force SEAL Ranger operating behind enemy lines as a submarine door gunner, I hate stolen valor

I’m a former Marine. Now I manage a bank. Had a client come in and tell me he was in the Corps during Iraq. Multiple things he said didn’t add up. The biggest give away was when I asked were he went for Boot Camp. Dude said Fort Wolters in Texas. If you are an enlisted Marine there are only two places you can go for Boot Camp. Paris Island and Camp Pendleton. It’s not the lying that upset me, but the stories he tried to share about being shot in action. I’ve lost brothers in battle and I nearly had a PTSD episode and strangled him. If you never joined the military that’s okay, no one looks at you differently, but don’t lie about serving and especially about being a Purple Heart recipient

I've seen a great one online:
"What was your rank?"
"Specialist."
"Specialist in what?"
This was a guy who claimed to have been in the Army but somehow didn't know that specialist was a rank.

I’ve got 2 good ones:

1) a guy at a bar heard me talking to a buddy that’s a former marine. He started to tell us about his time in the Marine Corps NATIONAL GUARD.

2) I had a customer trying to get a Military Discount and mentioned that he was a Marine. I asked what his MOS was and he told me he was Medic…..

It's messed up. They are pretending to be someone with honour, respect, dignity, but they're lying - in essense going against everything they pretend to represent. That's disrespectful to every single person that has & currently is serving.

I've accidentally done "stolen valor" many times. I'm 26, have a solid build from my training and was raised to use sir and ma'am. I've had people give me military discounts without even asking many times as well ask thanking me for my service periodically. Namely I got discount haircuts without realizing it for 3 years before she curiously asked which branch and I corrected her. She was surprised and notified me I had gotten it every time lol

There was a guy in my company at basic who said he was a secret navy seal, apparently his uncle was a seal and gave him his job so he could retire, the scariest part about his story is that I think he believed it

Dude I am drinking beer with my running medals shaking my head at these idiots. I'm never in the military I always have massive respect for the military and veterans

Joined the Army at 17 and retired 24 years later. Never knowingly met a person stealing valor. I am also 100% disabled with SMC. 😊I am now 84 years old.

It upsets me because they are the reason why it’s hard to trust who says they are homeless vets. Not to mention that it’s impersonating. Vets help vets but the stolen valor makes it where no one bats an eye.

If I was a veteran, me personally, I wouldn't care, until they wore something that they absolutely shouldnt...then I'd be mad

I've never served. I work with an 18yo girl who told us she joined the marines, but got injured during boot camp and got discharged; fair enough. Later she was waxing poetic about how even though she's only 18, she was old enough to see horrible things in the military....

I once had a guy tell me he was so good at being a Navy Seal, they made him a Green Beret as well !!!

I once had an actual operator(Ret) tell me "you'll learn more about Special Forces from cooks and supply troops than you ever will from an operator"

I worked Security in a hospital in Canada for 5 years and we had this BIG dude who always talked about being in the military and being is Bosnia, and started saying he was a Lieutenant and his unit loved him and how he scared people to stop bar fights with his unit because the locals knew about him and not to F with him. (but he was now working minimum wage Security at a hospital), and that his unit back then was what eventually became the JTF2.

Everyone just rolled their eyes and ignored him.

The dude was like 45.

Had a guy tell me his brother skipped Marine Coprs Bootcamp because he's was "TOO in shape" and he went straight to being in Recon AND a Seal.

I don’t get mad, just disappointed. People are stupid and I love when they get caught so they get punished.

Feeling nostalgic going down the stolen valor video rabbit hole. My cousin passed away from an injury while deployed and I used to talk to him about these videos and ask him about ppl I seen irl. Miss you cousin E.

I had a new co-worker at a well known tech company come in on his first week and immediately tell everyone that he used to be in the Marine Corps. I laid low for a few weeks and just let the dude keep talking. Eventually I pulled him aside and let him know I was actually a Marine and I cannot tell you how satisfying the look on his face was. He told me he got dropped in boot camp (lol) and so on. The dude ended up transferring to a different office a month later.

After serving myself and having a disabled brother in law who was a green beret wounded in Afghanistan, it does bother me when people wear the uniform like this. They did nothing to sacrifice or earn anything on them.
