Octavia Spencer is an accomplished actress, a children's author, and an all-around badass.
Who is Octavia Spencer you might ask? The Oscar-winning actress has starred in “The Shape of Water,” “Hidden Figures” and the “The Help,” but she spent years in small roles before she got her big break.
Octavia was born and raised in Alabama as one of seven children. Her father died when she was 13 and her mother supported the family as a maid, until she too died when Octavia was 18. Octavia studied English and Theatre in college and landed her 1st role in 1996’s “A Time to Kill” after the director asked her to audition.
She then moved to LA to pursue acting and for years, starred in small TV and film roes including “ER” and “The X-Files.” In 2011, she landed her bid break as Minny Jackson in “The Help” — which won her an Oscar. She went on to act in “Get on Up,” the “Divergent” series and voiced Mrs. Otterton in the animated hit “Zootopia.” In 2017, she earned an Oscar nom for her part in “Hidden Figures” and in 2018, she was nominated again for “The Shape of Water.” She is the first Black actress to receive two consecutive Oscar nominations and is also a children’s book author. She has a handful of future projects in the works so make sure you look out for her!
