VW Bus T2 Westfalia external Power Plug failure #satisfying #creative #westfalia #vwbus

On this external electric Plug from Schuko, originally used on a VW Bus T2 Westfalia, one of the pins came loose. This is a quite common flaw on those units after having been in service for nearly 50 years. In the beginning there were strange noises around the plug while in use and a failure of the charger that probably struggled with the intermittent power supply. The contact was really bad while it also generated heat. This of course was a significant safety issue.

Unfortunately, a replacement unit is not available with given dimensions. An option would have been to cut open the sheet metal and make a replacement unit fit. This was here no option as we wanted to keep everything as original as possible. The electrics had been updated 2 years ago with all the modern state of art safety measures.

We have decided to go for a replacement pin manufactured from aluminium on the lathe to fit the existing unit.

Aluminium is an excellent conductor and an easy material to work with.

One of the existing fuses behind the pin was removed as there is no need for it anymore. The new T2 electric set up has been taking care with of numerous safety measures as it is standard for today`s electric installations.
