Laurie Anderson - O Superman (Lyrics)

🎤 Laurie Anderson - O Superman Lyrics:

[Intro]
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha…

[Verse]
O Superman
O Judge
O Mom and Dad
Mom and Dad
Ah, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

O Superman
O Judge
O Mom and Dad
Mom and Dad
Ah, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

Hi, I'm not home right now
But if you want to leave a message
Just start talking at the sound of the tone
Ah, ah
Ah, ah, ah, ah
Hello? This is your mother, are you there?
Are you coming home?
Ah, ah, ah

Hello? Is anybody home?
Well, you don't know me, but I know you
And I've got a message to give to you
Here come the planes
So you better get ready, ready to go
You can come as you are, but pay as you go, pay as you go

Ah, ah ah ah ah
And I said: okay, who is this really? And the voice said:
This is the hand, the hand that takes
This is the hand, the hand that takes
This is the hand, the hand that takes
Here come the planes
They're American planes, made in America
Smoking or non-smoking?
Ah, ah
Ah, ah ah ah
And the voice said: Neither snow nor rain nor gloom of night
Shall stay these couriers from the swift completion
Of their appointed rounds

[Bridge]
'Cause when love is gone, there's always justice
And when justice is gone, there's always force
And when force is gone, there's always Mom. Hi Mom!
Ah, ah
Ah, ah ah ah

So hold me, Mom, in your long arms
So hold me, Mom, in your long arms
In your automatic arms, your electronic arms
In your arms
So hold me, Mom, in your long arms
Your petrochemical arms, your military arms
In your electronic arms

this song feels like it’s meant to be beautiful, like home, but the ruins of it. When the world ends and all that’s left is an apocalyptic scene, this song will feel real.

It makes me think of someone who can't distinguish fake from reality anymore. They live in a state of awaken dreaming, with brief moments of awareness like when you suddently know you are dreaming. Seeing comfort in what's dangerous, trashing against soft embraces.
It's so utterly heartbreaking and wholesome that after everything, with layers and layers of inhumanity, it's still possible to hear the smile in "Hi mom".

When I was a small child.... I used to fall asleep to music. I had no streaming software, so I downloaded stuff from cds and usb. I had a playlist on my ipod to sleep to. For me it was calming, for others, it was eerie. They were concerned. The songs on the playlist were very much like this. Very much. Songs like these comfort me, bring me back to my childhood. And it has me realize, why I am so into liminal spaces. And why they comfort me. This song reminded me of it all. Wow. What a... a... beautiful song... -:)-

Laurie Anderson an underrated artist and genius. no song has given more dread and yet people still voluntarily listen to it. it is really something

This music is way ahead of its time. Can't believe this was made in 1981.

This song is hypnotizing yet horrifying. Callous yet comforting. Familiar yet unknowable. Maternal yet mechanical. I love it

this song terrifies me. the "ah, ah, ah, ah" in the background grows familiar to me for some reason the longer i listen to it. the voice tone kinda reminds me of a family member of mine and this just makes it even scarier. imagine hearing your family member in some random song🥲

This song for some reason makes me imagine soldiers who never came home. And it gives me chills

1:50 That line. God that line. It's so much. It's seeing pictures of your ancestors, it's holding an antique, it's learning about someone history that you can relate to. It's walking through a doorway in your childhood home and seeing the little mark where mom measured your height. Looking down at where you were. So tiny, sweet, curious and scared. Realizing how far you've come from that little child and wondering what you would say to them now.

this song feels wrong, but like its trying hard to not to be. like something horrifying trying to comfort you.

it’s giving a 5 y/o getting hugged by a skinwalker in the woods after being abandoned. Though so blood thirsty, so empathetic.
Though the skinwalker can’t talk, the hug is still comforting for the child, who never had a true one.

I love how this song has so many different effects on so many different people. I've read the comments and so many either reflect on happy times or feel a strange comfort. I just feel sad, like there is an empty piece of my heart that just wishes it were full and despises the state that it has always been in

this song was written after the US sent military aircraft into iran in an attempt to recover hostages, but several of the helicopters crashed in the desert and the hostages weren't recovered for another 270 days.
its sort of a cynical commentary on how we idolize our military power, but it doesn't really solve the problems it attempts to fix, it just exists for its own sake. the "mom and dad" in this song are the leadership claiming they can make everything right, but their methods of doing so are sinister and inhumane: automatic arms, petrochemical arms, military arms. the hand that takes. "if not justice, there's always force."
notice also how the singing voice joins the background "ha ha ha ha" at some points, not in a joyful way, but in an almost weary way; holding a superficial cheer that seems as if it is laughing **at** the claims the voice on the phone is making.

The "Are you coming home?" Hits me hard...I've been thinking of running away for awhile and that almost made me cry. I feel like i can only trust my mom anymore, and the fact that the part before said, "Hello? This is your mother." Hit a little too close to home.

The monotonous laughter in the background that is always so prominent and yet also fades away, and the calm singing juxtaposed with the eerie lyrics and subject. I can’t help but compare it the feeling of something being so personal yet holding their air of fuzziness to it— like knowing something is wrong but mot being able to truly digest that fact.

This song makes me glad my mom is still alive. But it also reminds me that nothing lasts forever, and makes me miserable every time i remember, that one day, me and my mom will talk for the final time. And it’s making me think about everything bad that’s happened. Ever.

This song is so captivating and sad but also slightly unsettling but in a comforting way. The ending feels like a resolution and a climax at the same time. It's like a reunion with the mom. Idk i really like this it gave me chills.

I can’t imagine how those mothers felt when they sent their sons away let alone receiving this message…. Moms need so much more appreciation. We would literally die for our children.
