In a parallel combination of capacitors, the same potential difference is applied across each capacitor because they are connected to the same two points in the circuit. The charge on each capacitor is proportional to its capacitance, so the capacitor with a larger capacitance will store more charge than the capacitor with a smaller capacitance. This is why the charge on each capacitor is different in a parallel combination.

In contrast, when capacitors are connected in series, the potential difference across each capacitor is different because the capacitors have different capacitances. The charge on each capacitor is proportional to its capacitance, but the same current flows through each capacitor because they are connected in a single path.
