Sadly it's not really a joke, it's just a heavily normalized cultural expectation that's put on fathers in Japan, to keep extremely toxic levels of dedication to their employer. Same as Ness' dad, Goku, and many other famous absent fathers in Japanese fiction that are depicted as totally normal. Only in recent years have these norms really started to be challenged. I wouldn't even bet on the writers intending to make a cheating joke.
