About 15 years ago in highschool I was wearing a che Guevara t shirt at a movie theater and an older man gently took me aside and said something like "Son, I know you don't mean any harm but you shouldn't wear that t shirt anymore. He did some very bad things." It really made an impression on me and I learned a lesson. You've got to get real with people if you want to get through to them.

I think part of the reason why Charlie goes on the attack like that is that the majority of students are out of the same mould so Charlie sees them as a sort of Hydra.

Anyone who shows up at a Charlie and Candice event wearing a Che shirt, spouting the “good side” of socialism, is going to get what they get! To somehow think you will win a socialism/capitalism in that arena begs the question, ….Why?! There’s no “good” socialism. We really need to get smarter about that.

While I agree with your general approach for making a quality impact in a debate, I can’t help but consider Charlie’s perspective on this one. He travels nationwide to offer a different perspective to the most hostile and politically skewed institutions in our country….college campus. He is brash, he generally is confrontational…but his approach ruffles feathers where it is needed most, and is heavily in the minority. This takes guts…and I can only imagine it would lend oneself to start off round one with a Mike Tyson right hook. Thank you for your content as usual Jake!

Like you said, it was unnecessarily mean start of conversation. Shaming someone can lead to unpredictable results. It can make him think more about what he is doing, it can make him just dig in more. Maybe Charlie Kirk expected less reasonable question from such a person and wanted to make just a spectacle instead of having genuine conversation?

Jake this was a great clip to analyze and you did a great job. I really like Charlie and Candace but they do tend to be overly confrontational. I used to be like them I confess... but I saw people shut down and I had to ask myself "Do I want to change their mind or do I just want to "win" this debate?" I started asking people I disagree with more questions and only give my opinion if they asked or if it was absolutely necessary. Most of the time, if I ask the right questions, they start to see the problems with their opinion on their own, and since I'm not trying to win, they're mentally in a place where it isn't embarrassing to change their mind. Dr. Jordan Peterson is so good at having a legitimate conversation, but Dennis Praeger is a master at this. He is wonderful at sitting down and having a calm, rational, friendly conversation with those he disagrees with. Of coarse there is a time and a place for a smackdown, though...
