Hi everyone!!

In this video let us understand about polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), also referred to as proton exchange membrane fuel cell.
PEM fuel cells use solid polymer membranes as the electrolyte. Each electrode is comprised of a porous, high-surface area material coated impregnated with an electrocatalyst, typically platinum.
The PEM Fuel Cell is fueled with pure hydrogen and oxygen or air as oxidant.

Watch the video to find out how polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell works, PEMFC advantages, issues and applications.

Yup water content is important for existence of distinct hydrophilic channels for proton transport.
However too much moisture can make the membrane swell up leading to reduction in mechanical and thermal stability.
Also we cannot use any membrane we like. Some part of polymer must have hydrophilic molecules while the polymer backbone is generally of hydrophobic nature. Theoretically we cannot afford to have whole polymer to be completely hydrophilic (since there will be a massive reduction in mechanical strength as it will absorb a lot of moisture and swell up) or completely hydrophobic ( since proton transport cannot occur due to little to no proton conductivity left ). So finding a sweet spot between them is important and thats why perflourinated membranes like Nafion are used mostly ( with cheaper alternatives like sulfonated-PEEK membranes) .

I am currently working on speek membranes so wrote it.

Relatively low temperatures. Low temperature operation. Fast start up. The polymer membrane needs to be kept humid. The poison side.
