I don't miss anyone from any workplace.
I like company, but due to my upbringing, I don't feel comfortable around large crowds of people.

Your life mirrors mine so much. I was 44 selling my own business and faced all the challenges you did. I, like you, was knocked sideways (almost angered) by the lack of people who kept in touch. They were my employees and never my friends but how I'd helped them and not received as much as a text or phonecall afterwards, really hit me.

I am doing exactly the same as you now although I'm 47 not in my 60s, still doing a few days in the industry and keeping myself busy. To me it's about keeping my purpose and keeping busy. Crazy how much your journey is the same as mine. Good content. Well done Nick.

PS. Just looked you up on Linked In and you even sold for the same price as me at the same age!

A colleague at work summed things up - we dont have friends at work, merely acquaintances. The common bond is work, and we find that once we leave, we often realise we have little in common with those we worked with. Here today, forgotten tomorrow.

It's a trade off, what you lose in social connections, you gain in Peace, low stress, health. I just worked 3 days, 15 hour shifts surrounded by people. Yesterday I rented a car and drove the Angeles Crest Highway, rollerbladed, hiked a big hill in nature. and took a stroll through Cal Tech campus in pasadena on a hot summer day. Guess which day I enjoyed more? 😊 I'm 59 and will try to work until 62. I work 3 days a week. Ideally I would work one 15 hour shift a week to get that Social/Peace balance.

OMG, this is literally what we were saying about one of my in-laws. She's retired early but because of COVID and new mobility issues found herself home alone to much. She's driving everyone mad as her friends either still working or are just now retiring and are in their travel and bucket list phase, so don't need her.

I didn’t have friendships at work. A few (very few) were casual acquaintances. I’m struggling as friends and family die, move far away and making new friends.

I think going from earner/saver to spender is pretty high up there. Mindset shift

You're too harsh on yourself. Your staff/employees were grateful to you for holding the ship together. Have you thought that they may be at fault for not keeping you in their lives, and for casting you adrift.
