I trained in shotokan karate back in the 80s and it was all about stretching the legs to allow the hips to open up to perform the side kick throwing the hip and leg snd twisting the rear foot around so the toes faced away from you we did hundreds bof this type of kick
When I started Taekwon do I was already able to break correctly and my side kick was powerfull and direct contact with what ever I hit
That was the old karate way and was still the best martial art that I studied I am a 3rd Dan black belt aged 58 years old.
