Stam Fine Reviews Looks at two late 90s disaster movies that came out with a few months of each other, both of which showed us people dealing with a Volcanic eruption. Dante's Peak starred Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton, while Volcano had Tommy Lee Jones, Anne Heche, and Don Cheadle.

The grandma walking through the acid river has fucked me up for nearly of my life. Trauma. Real trauma.

I worked on the FX team for “Dante’s Peak” at Digital Domain, as a practical FX Artist. We set up at the old Van Nuys Naval station, which is also where the big damn bursting effect was done (smaller scale). It was such a great time and I worked with awesome Artists who were really serious about their craft and realism.
In the mold shop we created plaster casts of the miniature building fascades, designed to be blown apart easily. We also made lots of fake little trees out of real twigs and branches we gathered from around the area. The whole gig was a ton of fun and a time I’ll never forget, like summer camp! I’m sad CGI has become the norm since then because we Hollywood Artists handmade these models with love.
We all laughed about the “Volcano” production happening at the same time, btw!
The entire practical FX crew was around 200 hard-working Artists putting in LONG hours to make the movie happen.

Although the two had similar premises, Dante's Peak was more realistic and also reminds a lot of pacific northwest residents of Mt. St. Helens.

Dante's Peak is Jaws, but the shark is a volcano. The first victims even get killed while swimming, and you have that whole "we can't call off the INSERT LOCAL EVENT just because a volcano might erupt, it's tourist season!" thing.

Brosnan is Cooper, with a bit of Quint's obsession and backstory tossed in. And Hamilton is essentially Brody, worried about her kids and slowly becoming more convinced by the scientist.

The sequel to Volcano is obviously The Core. "We're going where the lava lives, gentlemen, and this time, it's personal."

Dante's Peak blows away Volcano (pun intended). I've seen Volcano maybe once in it's entirety, but have watched Dante's Peak dozens of times. MUCH better movie!

Dante's Peak is a 90's classic. It came out the same year my family visited Mount St. Helens, so my 12-year-old brain made a special connection with it.

As someone who lives in Washington State when Mt. St Helens erupted in 1980, the scenes in 'Dante's Peak' of the mountain erupting, the ash falling and racing down the mountain are some of the most realistic depicted on screen. Eastern Washington and Idaho spent weeks digging out from the ash fall.

Dante's peak was by far the better film.

In Volcano, Tommy Lee Jones is playing Tommy Lee Jones as hard as only a post-Fugitive Tommy Lee Jones could.

Dante's Peak definitely, Linda Hamilton will always get my attention

I always love when we get these instances of parallel productions how one project ends up with a cool evocative title like "Dante's Peak"and the lesser film is just called "Volcano".

Dante's Peak is my favourite of the two and one of my favourite disaster movies from the nineties. Volcano has its moments, some of the action scenes are fun for instance but I feel the build up to Dante's Peak is a lot better and the payoff is more satisfying.

As a then 10 year old I remember seeing both in theaters. 1997 was a good year for volcanos. These movies made me the man I am today.

I remember in middle school we were doing a whole lesson in volcanoes for a lesson on disasters and after about two weeks of exhaustion from all the lessons and history we had to do, our teacher lwt us watch this as a reward

The class was hyped the entire time, it was amazing.

The amount of times Brosnan calls the kids “children” makes me laugh. Every time he says it I think of his pipe smoking scientist character from Mars Attacks

Wallace, Idaho (the main filming site for Dante’s Peak) is a beautiful town! I definitely recommend staying up there if you can manage it.

The big thing that the more interesting disaster movies get right is giving the lead actor a cool overlanding vehicle that can double as a rescue vehicle. “Earthquake” does this to a lesser degree, but it’s most successful in “Twister” and “Dante’s Peak”.

Dante's Peak is a classic movie from my childhood. So many memorable scenes... I always wanted a rock like the kids had. I was also happy to see the dog rescued with every rewatch.
