Quantum3D AAlchemy 8232SB, TYAN Thunder 2500 Hardware Overview and Memory Upgrade

Lets see what I bought! This video is an overview of the Quantum3D AAlchemy 8232SB rackmount system. The motherboard is the TYAN Thunder 2500. Which is the most epic SLOT1 motherboard ever made. I also got a nice memory kit for this system so we upgrade it to 4gb sdram!

The project contains out:

1 complete Quantum3D AAlchemy with 8232SB
1 project Quantum3D AAlchemy with 8132SB

What an absolute legend piece of a retro computer.

Oh the days when fast RAM is the speed of a slow (SATA) modern SSD. :D

Isane, so nice that you have the system and are making videos now for all to enjoy.. Also just a random Matrox M3D in the box, crazy. But I cringed when you but the harddrives on the PSU... just imagining them falling onto the mainboard

I think those RJ45 ports are for synchronizing multiple graphics cards at the same time. It works similar to the genlock in professional video equipment.

I have a question about these AAlchemy cards: I know the large number of VSA-100 chips was used mainly for FSAA, but what's the maximum limit for straight SLI? For example I know the mercury brick was made up of four large cards, each itself a single-card Voodoo2 SLI solution, but the most horsepower you'd get out of the thing as a whole was equal to that of a standard Voodoo2 SLI solution - but with 4-way AA so the image quality must have been awesome. Is it the same case here? Can the 8232SB do 4-way SLI like the Voodoo5-6000 or is it limited to 2-way SLI plus 4x FSAA at no performance loss?

I can't believe it has a "do not lick" sticker. I want one hehe

Damn dude this is awesome. I've gotta get one of these someday! That Tyan Thunder 2500 is wicked in itself too though, I mean 8 DIMM slots all side by side with dual slot 1 looks absolutely mental! O.O Would be really cool if this machine worked for all the games we're going to be playing at the LAN!

This is a pretty awesome series! I love old obscure hardware!

there are two versions of this card
8132 and 8164
you can have 1 or 2 or 4 cards up to 8464 (yes this exists and pictures are available online)
checkout dodge garage - this website have a lot about voodoo especially those Quantum3d (they even used VooDoo3 for another such farm)

Those 8P8C sockets are for synchronising of up to 32 VSA-100 in SLI configuration

and no, neither port/socket nor just plug can be named RJ45 as RJ stands for Registered Jack and both form factor and wiring including exact colour scheme have to match
not even ethernet is RJ45 and people call it wrongly (same as WiFi is not a wireless communication standard, but a certification scheme for IEEE802.11 standard)

Please don't do that, don't mix thing like all others are doing

I had a TYAN board similar to that but instead of the built in Audio it had an ATI Rage XL. It was an awesome board until the Caps started to flake out and at the time I didn't have a Soldering iron that could handle "Lead free" Solder let alone heat up a multi layer PCB so I gave it to a friend.

I love Slot 1 systems! My first computer was a 500mhz Slot 1 Compaq desk pro with 128 mb ram. I fitted a PCI graphics card into it. If you still have this machine, I'd love to see more about it! Perhaps fit an AGP or PCI graphics card into it, and run a few benchmarks? Have you discovered the RAM capacity for this system?

That card has a lot of hours on it as the paint used for the heatsinks changes from black to an off bronze like color from the heat.

Reminds me of the Celeron Based Quantum 3D Boxen that was in the HydroThunder Arcade machine I used to take care of at work.

A really nice find!, willing too bet that wasn't cheap considering the market quantum 3d was aiming at most of the time.

I have no interest in this hardware, however I like you so I am watching it :) I have a dual PIII Server sitting here in my office on the floor, it was my first "real server" back in the mid 90's, now it is simply in the way. "It ran Novell Netware" using Arcnet "2MB" coax network cards. Yes I am that old :)

Very nice. It's about time I build something with my own Tyan 2500. Should try to find more memory too, got 1.5GB in it now. Btw check if both your CPUs are detected, mine shows there are 2 CPU's in the POST screen, which yours doesn't seem to do
