Oh Molly I totally understand what you are saying, but spending umhundred dollars on my phone I would buy a case for it anyway just out of protection. The problem is an easy fix and should have been taken care of before the launch.

I dont have any problem with Iphone 4 reception in My area, but if you do then hold diffrently, put case(clear, gumm, plastic, tape, sticker for; anntena bending) or bumper in some week recep.locations. Anntena is exposed more then any other cell phone (alluminium bending) Iphone is well built to the point witch glass, metal cassing shell. If iPhone failed's on the rock or hard surfis then is gone break .Iphone 4 is not cheap.So dont't be stupid Ok! You need protection anyway and helps with reception
