Duramax is DEAD...because of THIS?? (No CRANK...Starter & Ignition Switch Replaced!)

This 2005 Chevy 2500 Duramax work truck is a bit rough around the edges, but should have plenty of life left in the drivetrain. However, it refuses to CRANK over.

Owner already fired a STARTER and IGNITION SWITCH at it, and of course it's STILL BROKEN.

Let's scan it for codes and see if the PCM can engage the starter relay...
Never seen THIS cause a No-CRANK before!

It's really weird to watch a real ECM problem instead of wiring or connector problems after so many videos from Ivan lmao
Great diagnostic!

I just got back from the car repair shop where I went because of a broken windshield washer pump. When I saw them start messing with the wiring, I heard Ivan's voice in my head: "No! If the pump starts working now, you won’t be able to find the exact spot where the problem is!"😊

They used Delphi and Bosch units in these Duramax's and it seems the Delphi units were constantly a problem but the Bosch units rarely were a problem. Just so you are aware for future as a "suspicion" . Great diagnosis as always.

First thing that went through my mind is how people who don't actually work on cars for a living don't have a process. And that's a big problem. The customer gathered zero data initially. What if those codes were there before? Just to say there's a reason why there are people who are employed as technicians.

Weird coincidence - the ECM goes off right after the starter was replaced... Quick and thorough diagnostic, Ivan! Glad to know the vehicle is back on the road with replacement ECM.

Although I don’t work on my cars anymore, I really enjoy watching your troubleshooting skills. Great job as always.

Very enlightening, I will keep this in my back pocket just in case. Hope my 02 dirty max has the Bosch ECU!

Had someone bring me a Honda Element. Inoperative horn. Dealership charged them 60 for diagnosis and quoted nearly 600 to replace the horn. Their diagnostic process was to merely swap two relays, evidenced by plier marks. 15 minutes with a meter and I found the wire at the horn was broken. Less than 30 minutes to diagnose and repair. Simple power and ground checks!

I bought a 05 Dmax 3500 SRW Crew Cab 4x4 brand new in early 2005. Biggest POS ever. I had it back to the dealer for 31 issues in 9 months of owning it.

There was no pattern of failure. Paint pealing off the bed, broken hood hinge, bad wheel bearing, bad U-joint, bad carrier bearing, bad injector, failed glow plugs, bad dash cluster, failed passenger power seat, ect.

Traded it after 9 months and 10, 000 miles for a dreaded 2006 F350 6L PowerStroke. Drove it for 5 years and about 120, 000 miles with only one issue, a Steering Box.

After 4 GM vehicle I was done and have not owned one since.

My 2002 F350 7.3 diesel set a bad glow plug code, and was starting slow. Was a corroded connection in the over complicated battery to glow plugs and starter wiring harness. The harness went from battery to battery, to the starter and to the glow plug harness. Probably should have been built in pieces but wasn’t. On the other hand, lasted over 20 years. Fixed the connectors, charged batteries and, all codes went away, and starts great. The harness btw, was 500$ from ford. I replaced some ends for about 35$ and all was well. Ford actually has a later battery terminal with 3 wires able to come into it, to combat this problem.

I have seen that issue before when a customer hooked up a battery charger reversed polarity and smoked the computer.

Another bullseye from Ivan. Straight forward diagnosis and repair for a change.

Diag with a guarantee, where else can you even get something like that. PHAD . Great sleuth work Ivan.

Diagnostic plan, wiring diagram and diagnostic tool and proof positive the ECM is bad. Good one Ivan. Too bad the owner used the shotgun method.

Nice video. Wow an actual bad ECM that was diagnosed correctly instead of shotgunned. 🤣🤣

Nice job GM. Putting the ECM in an unfriendly environment at best. And watching your videos Ivan, it seems your Thinktool is a better test device than the SnapOn.

Warn about Cp4 Bosch injection pump fail on newer Duramax and Cummins and Ford all send metal through entire injection system causes $13000+ damage.
A filter kit and or new upgrade pump is available.
For new common rail diesel.
Disaster.
Also grid heater nut on Cummins 6.7 falls into cylinder wipes out motor .
Upgrade kit also .

Ps who is the best ECM rebuilder repair etc ?
Is plug and play any good?

Not to beat in the owner, but how difficult is it to check for voltage at the starter solenoid BEFORE replacing anything. I mean, if you're knowledgeable enough to know how to replace a starter, you're probably knowledgeable enough to use a test light or meter while cranking.

1:48 Well there has to be SOME communication between the PCM and the scan tool if the scan tool is reading P0601 from the PCM.
