For anyone who doesn't surf, a 10 second hold down feels like 1 minute. A one minute hold down is insane and would kill 99.9999% of humans on the planet.

The hold downs are the worst. Nothing makes you appreciate the taste of air like being sucked into the sand over and over

Imagine holding your breath for 1 minute while jogging at 5mph on the treadmill. HR 140-160 and now you're holding your breath and trying to stay calm. I'll say it again- big wave surfers are some of the most impressive athletes on the planet.

Big wave surfers are on a different level of danger that very few can only imagine.

The longest I’ve been held down from a wave was 5 seconds and I can’t even handle that 😭😭😭

A minute is actually crazy. I would’ve drowned. For me being in a hold for 5 seconds feels like minutes already.

Worst I’ve had is a 20 second hold down followed by 2 10 seconds and I was very close to blacking out, was totally convinced that was the end of me, I’m lucky there was a lull straight after. 1 minute with that much power in the water I just don’t see how you big wave guys can survive that even with all the training. Mental stuff.

Well, that’s a cautionary tale if I ever heard one.

As a former Life Guard and having lived on Oahu I used to practice holding my breath just for all the Surfing I was doing. It paid off once or twice . . . I know what you mean Dude !

Aloha Kai, I started watching you when your mother was still with all of us. I thought you and yours were so gorgeous. I love you guys, and NY husband, who passed last year really saw what a precious person you are.❤😊

I’ve never gone through a hold down before but did choke on a quarter once, knew I was running out of air and couldn’t breathe and then woke in the back of an ambulance. Not being able to breathe is absolutely horrible

As someone who lives near the beach I play in the waves but I get ragdolled around ALOT it’s crazy you really have to stay calm especially if your caught in a rip but usually when the wave is too big to go over I go under but you still get tossed around

In NJ around 1968 I got out after a hurricane (possibly Caroline) . I only caught 1 wave, a big thick, killer. I wiped — the speed was nutz, and was under for about 15 seconds, I was told. I thought it was 15 mins.

ragdolling, tomahawking, scorpioning, double up
It's always fun when someone uses the vocabulary peculiar to their profession. It's like they've slipped into an entirely different language.
Ragdolling I can probably grasp.
Tomahawking? Nope, no idea.
Scorpioning....I'm picturing a scorpion, and I think I probably don't WANT to know what this one means for a surfer.
Later: apparently these are terms used a lot in skiing.
At least it was only in Skiing Slang lists that I found explanations.
