Why Do Zebras Have Stripes?

Without watching this I know that zebras use these stripes to confuse enemies. When they stampede they look like one big black and white striped blur

I always thought the stripes were to confuse predators. When the herd runs, just imagine the stripes crossing everywhere. Ya I'd be one of those "which way did he go, George" guys. Ha

While the zebras stripes MIGHT confuse a predator, they're mostly used to keep biting flies off of them. FYI, I totally knew zebras were black with white stripes, though not because of the pigment thing. If you looked at the zebra's muzzle, which should hairless, it's black, therefore making zebras black with white stripes because it has black skin (does your brain hurt now?).

White with black stripes because the bottom is where the black stripes end and there is a space down there that is black stripe free.

I used to think they were white with black strips because they have more white but I read that zebras are born all black and get the white strips as they get older.
