When I heard KH's first campaign speech, I heard her say she wanted to 'build' the middle class. And after that, I listened and never heard her mention the working class. How did she intend to do build the middle class? A one-time tax credit for Americans making babies? She never said "re-build' even though the decimation of the so-called Professional Managerial Class (see Ehrenreich and Ehrenreich) is well-documented. Free tuition for public universities begins to address wealth inequality (more than income inequality) but it will take another 40 years (two generations) to win back just where we were in the 80s and 90s. And, I fear, this is more a state issue than a federal one. Americans yet don't know that real wages haven't increased since REagan. Yet, I do agree about wanting free tuition (undergrad and graduate) . I am furious -- that the significant majority of professors who are adjuncts are not included in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness and unwittingly excluded from the program should we 'retire' (read dismissed) before qualifying due to one of those curious political readings of present tense in the law. Expect a major disruption of Bidens SAVE program which would have me paying $10 a month on an over $100K balance in student loans after teaching for 20 years as an adjunct. Meanwhile, I would add that in a community college for 20 years: free legal advice (for students? faculty? Staff? community members?) on college campuses in every county in the country. It's relatively cheap; the location is there and it will help keep students in school. Because lack of access to legal representation is a leading cause of those things that I saw bounce college students out of school (and thus, a living wage): eviction, and domestic violence. As every community college administration knows, these campuses in every county in the country serve as the nexus of local access to the middle class for students and their families and their neighbors. In addition to demanding what we want and need, I think we need to do a fiscal audit of the formal and less-formal institutions present in communities and draw lines around these from development and encroachment : senior centers; libraries; parks; educational institutions; houses of worship and religiously-affiliated institutions (think YMCA) that provide services without respect to individually-held faith; theatres; recreation centers; community-based organization; community refrigerators; museums; legal clinics; etc. Appreciate you, David.
