Hey everyone, My name is Carson Sleep and I am a 6th generation rancher on the Sleep Ranch.

Our ranch is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota where my family settled and started ranching in 1883. I started this channel to show how a working ranch operates and to document our everyday activities. My goal is to have fun and to bridge part of the ever growing gap between American Beef producers and consumers.

Join me as I learn more about raising cattle, caring for the land and working/operating equipment!

Good to see the beef farmer getting a good price for a change. I remember as a kid in the 70s my dad saying 2 year steers where only getting $30 Australian. It was the beef recession. He did well later had just bought a larger farm. He took on the neighbours Freisan bull calves
And then kept them as 3 yr Olds for the US burger export market which
Came good again. Nothing like
$2000 + for grown steers now.
He would be looking down smiling.

Hi Carson, being a rancher in Australia, I was highly interested in some facts. I was also an Auctioneer and livestock buyer; we run around 8000 heads from breeders to grass/pasture fat steers. We turn our cows out from 8 to 10 years depending on the season; it is nowhere as severe as yours, winter may get to 8 celius. Frost ruins our winter feed so we supplement with protein licks. At present cows like you just sold would make easily around $2, 000 to $2500 AUD. Best prices I have ever seen in 70 years in the livestock business. Loved your video and content. Saw the one you did when you visited the feedlot. Would love to take about that it will be too long, we do feedlot occasionally. From Down Under

I think your Dad has the right idea....Heard said...If you want less trouble...run the cows 5-6 years and then cull them out..
I have a hard time to do that now ...we have picked up more grass and I want more numbers...my wife is thinking we have to be careful with ...cows falling out
good calf prices now..

Yeah, that was really interesting.
Thanks for showing us that, as never seen any live auction before.
Your Dad is pretty laid back and cool
Have a good one

This was really fun to watch, Carson! I've not been to a live sale before and neither have either of the girls so we were excited to see it! Great job!

Thanks. That was a great video. I get a kick out of eating hamburgs at the live beef source when the hamburg might have come from several states away. I also wonder about the number of days between when a cow is slaughtered and the meat ends up in a retail supermarket. I mean is it a couple of days, a week or more???
