"Meet me in the middle, " says the unjust man. You take a step towards him, he takes a step back. "Meet me in the middle, " says the unjust man.

"Look what you made me do to you." says the abuser. The fact that it won't look *exactly* like Germany will be used to obfuscate the fact that *it is happening here and now*

I believe the richest man in the world siegheiling during the investiture and half the population maintaining their support to him was quite the Rubicon.

I am a german who, in school, has read a many poetry and letters of people who wrote down their thoughts, fears and predictions before the rise of the nazis which were later looked back upon in an attempt to understand what went wrong, how it could ever have come so far and how the people back then felt.

This feels like one of these letters.

“I don’t want it to be true yet” hit me like a kick in the gut

The Rolling Stone headline “EVERYONE WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO PROTECT YOU FROM THIS FAILED MISERABLY” has been repeating in my head all week.

I asked myself this exact question after Jan 6th and the answer I arrived at was “if he regains political power following his failed Putsch” because that seemed like the real tipping point for Weimar

I still have no idea what to actually do about it.

"The readiness to give up on things being better and just wanting them to be quiet" hit me harder than I even want to admit...I'm tired and these were the words that gave me new life.

I think it should be remembered that for the average German, very little changed for them day to day as long as they weren’t part of a targeted group, until very late in the war when they lost everything and Allied forces occupied their town. The “rubicon” problem is that everyday life feels normal as long as long as you aren’t personally threatened.

“Accurately describing their behavior sounds like hyperbole”
Damn.

What you're describing about wanting to avoid being labeled an "alarmist" is a prime example of the Cassandra effect. We see what the future holds so clearly but all our warnings are ignored until it's too late

P.S. I'm so glad you decided to post this!

"The concentration camp was never the normal condition for the average gentile German. Unless one were Jewish, or poor and unemployed, or of active leftist persuasion or otherwise openly anti-Nazi, Germany from 1933 until well into the war was not a nightmarish place. All the “good Germans” had to do was obey the law, pay their taxes, give their sons to the army, avoid any sign of political heterodoxy, and look the other way when unions were busted and troublesome people disappeared.Since many “middle Americans” already obey the law, pay their taxes, give their sons to the army, are themselves distrustful of political heterodoxy, and applaud when unions are broken and troublesome people are disposed of, they probably could live without too much personal torment in a fascist state — some of them certainly seem eager to do so."

I can tell you this. It was Minuteman on a short that said something like "If you ever wondered what Germans in 1931 were doing it's whatever you're doing right now"

At the time I was eating oatmeal and preparing for my morning workout. Which really speaks to the insidiousness of it all. For a huge group of Germans nothing really changed for them until their cities starting getting bombed to dust. That was 13 years later.

If that is what the Rubicon looks like today (1:42), then it really is the perfect metaphor; that one could cross it without ever getting their feet wet at all, not even realizing what the significance is of what they stepped over.

We are in “disappearing people in vans” era right now. ICE did immigration raids in Texas this past weekend.

It's April 17. The Trump Administration sent several immigrants to a death camp in El Salvador without due process, and Trump is making noises about disappearing citizens. I didn't see this video when you posted it. But whatever anyone had thought about where the Rubicon was, we are there now.

I was expecting a "Let's say, for the sake of argument" and got hit by the somber tone like a truck. I fear what is to come.

"Cynicism is acceptance". I needed to hear that. Thank you!

To me the fact that the media stopped being actively hostile was the rubicon. Both its impact and what it would take for that to happen are massive

Suspension of due process was mine, this playlist is soul crushing to watch as it goes on because you can watch the background context go from dumb internet drama to open fascism and ending on a message to the audience to prepare for the end of American democracy
